no power up hills

my moms jeep 97 straight 6 auto, has no power goin up hills anymore just recently started doing this, it seems to rev up half way through the rpms and just sound loud with no power gains at all. No check engine light i did do a soft check engine thing key on off on off , and it had codes 12,42,47,55 in the guage. no idea what they are any help would be great. tranny is full of fluid. possibly a cat but after about half hour everything was ice cold .

Does it rev up like that when on level ground? When you take off?

The 12 is the battery has been disconnected recently, the 42 is a short in the ASD relay, the 47 is the voltage is not being sent to the battery all the time or the alternator is not charging right and the 55 is end of codes.I would say the worst one to worry about is the ASD short.I will do some checking for you.

I had no power on my four banger and found out that two of my spark plugs went bad.

correct the gas gauge does not work most of the time, when i start it it rattles like hell sounds like from the catalytic converter, then the rattle stops maybe when the piece gets lodged in the exhaust. my mom took it to the garage and they say o yeah i think its a cat, over 300 $$, where can i get a cheaper one for and how much, he said 180 for cat and 120 for labor what a rip. anyhow goin up hill rpms hang at about 3 grand and no power. i guess on semi hills to.

I know when I had my 88 Comanchee P/U with the straight six. I had the same loss of power, and it turned out to be a plugged cat.

Definitely sounds like a plugged cat...

The cat on my brother's Grand Prix clogged up so bad that once his car warmed up, it would rev like the tranny was slipping but it had NO power whatsoever. They had the whole engine and transmission torn apart and found that both were in good shape.

You can find new ones for around $100 online...I personally prefer the ones by Car-Sound/Magnaflow. They're not make/model specific though so you'd need to have an exhaust shop cut the old one out and weld the new one in. I'd say it shouldn't cost much more than $150-200 for parts and labor if you buy it yourself and pay someone to fix it. Okay...when I bought my Magnaflow cat, it cost me $100. They are now listing for over $200...so it MAY cost a crapload to fix. Shop around. lol

This is the universal fit listed for 1997 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L...list price is $232. Direct fit cat lists at $364.
