No Reverse!????

So I went out to go to work today and low and behold it will not go in reverse! It's a 2000 TJ manual 5 speed. All other gears will work and also work in 4x4 just not reverse and bad part it sounds like grinding when I go into reverse ugh any thoughts ?? Also last night I removed the skid plate to sand and repaint had some light rust, it's still drying so I have not put it back on yet. This wouldn't cause this would it?

I would think its a possibility since the skid plate supports the transmission/back of engine. You may have some binding issues.

So you mean to say that you are trying to drive off without the skid that holds up you TC? Or do you have another crossmember there?

Don't drive the jeep with the skid off. You will regret it. That skid is all that is holding up the TC/trans.

Yes you need to put the skid plate back in before driving that is why it says to support the transmission when removing the skid plate...
