That is why you rotate ALL five tires instead of four.

I'm jealous of early TJ's, they don't have the big ugly vent my 05 does

I replaced the tailgate on my '97 with a newer style one with the vent. That's why I took it off and put the license plate there.

How'd you mount the license plate on the back? I was thinkin of ordering the license plate and cb antenna mount from T&T customs.

Drilled two holes in the tailgate and used two large sheet metal screws. I also think I had to drill new holes in the license plate that were farther apart.

Also some thin foam tape under the edges to keep it from digging into the paint.

Some older pics I found:

I just put the screws back into place and that's that . When I took it off, I basically just threw away the light and the bulky hardware and strapped down the spare in my back "trunk" lol.

Before I did this though, I did do research about any local laws and there was nothing about a required third brake light

It's a federal (DOT) law. Any vehicle that came from the factory w/ a 3rd brake light..... must have it installed and in working order!
Jeeps started w/ 3rd light in early 90's I believe ........
But have never seen it rigidly enforced!

No worries mate. As stated.... never seen it enforced by Oklahoma.... Texas.... or anywhere else.
Military Police might have different feelings about that??

I just tell anyone that asks, I assume they were not available on my 98, since it had none when I bgt it. That probably won't work for you with a newer TJ.

Won't be a good look if you need a spare!

I was thinking of removing mine as well. I think Jeeps look much better with the tailgate spare off. I would eventually get a spare tire bumper mount.

Is there a quick disconnect on the 3rd brake wiring? (I haven't really investigated yet) Is their issues removing the wiring?

Isn't it illegal to have no 3rd brake light?

There is two connectors on the door that pop out of the wiring take those off and just pull the wires through

I just opened the tailgate and cut the wires at the connectors behind the cover.

Where'd you get the light for the license plate?
