Np231 fluid

I have quite a few quarts of mercon dexron III trans fluid from a fluid change in my tucks transmission. Can I use this in my np231 transfer case?

This site shows dexron ii. Will dexron iii work too? I know Patrick said it would but just making doubly sure

I called a jeep dealer they basically said anything but water. Dexron ii, iii, or, iv or even 30 weight motor oil. I'm gonna try the dexroniii

Any ATF is fine. It requires ATF due to its chain-based design.

Reviving an old thread here but wanted to keep from opening a new one. I've been told it's better to run synthetic 5w-30 motor oil in the np231 as atf isn't a lubricant and the engine oil will lubricate it and help it last longer? Should I run atf+4 same as my transmission or should I run the motor oil in it?

Stop listening to whoever told you that. Gear-based transfer cases use gear lubes but the 231 in your TJ is chain based and requires ATF which is considered a lubricant. If it wasn't a lubricant there'd be hundreds of thousands of dead/fried/burned up 231 transfer cases.

I knew if anyone could tell me it'd be you, thanks Jerry! My jeep is coming up on 125k miles and as far as I know t case fluid hasn't been changed. By the way I found my problem, wasn't u joints or bearings either one, it was my tranny mount, it was wore out bad and I could grab the driveshaft and move the tranny and t case back and forth. New mount and all is good! One more quick question for you Jerry, I'm leaking tranny fluid from between tranny and t case, I'm fairly sure it's the tranny seal causing it, as I have to top it off every so often. Can I change this seal from the outside by just removing the t case? Or is the seal installed from inside the tranny? Thanks!

The output shaft seal on my '97 TJ's 32RH was easily accessed by just pulling the tcase, I would imagine it's the same on your 30RH.

That's what I thought and have seen others like that but wanted to be sure before I pulled a t case for nothing. Think there's anything else I should do while I'm that far in? Thanks again Jerry!

A new seal should be all you need if that's what is leaking.

I'm losing transmission fluid from the transmission, and it's coming from between trans and t case so I figure it's the trans output seal
