oddball request

Im looking for any ideas of what anyone has done to the shifter after a lift. I have the skid dropped and my shifter hits the back of the console. I chopped it all to hell and now it gets hot like Texas. After I mutilated the plastic thing around the shifter, trimmed the console, my friend said, " why didnt you just heat and bend the shifter?" why? because Im dumb. thats why. I cant be the only person with a tcase drop that has this problem. Btw, its a 3" FT lift.

Pic's so we can see how chopped to hell it is.

Can you put some kind of heat shield around the area?

Ill get some pics tomorrow, just got it back from the shop tonight. Im trying to find a heat sheild. I was thinking of that insulation that some cars have under the carpets. My Mustang had it but I gutted it and then melted my shoe to the floor.

I just took the console apart and trimmed the black plastic ring around the shift boot with a dremel and that's all that was needed.

What a great excuse to get a SYE and shaft so you can raise the pan back up!

Since the shifter mount is now lower down the slot that the lever needs is longer. Heating and bending the lever helps clear it in the rear, but it'll hit in the front.

You'll have to redesign the entire console around the shifter, use a big boot, or raise the T-case back up and go to a CV shaft like someone said.

I dont have the funds for sye at this time. I just think its odd that no one else seems to have had this problem. I cant be the only Jeep with a lift and tcase drop. It still hits the console so I had to trim that too. When I put it in reverse, it picks the whole console up. I dont care about the cutting, I just cant take the heat from it. My foot feels like I was standing in a pond all day when I get home.

Nope, you aren't alone, you need the shifter relocation kit, I posted a thread about it a week or 2 ago, there are a few brands out there, most people seemed to think it was a pretty simple mod..

thanks for the info. Mine tcase doesnt bind, just the shifter hit. Im trying to find that insulation that some cars had under the hood or under the carpet. Thatll keep the heat out (and the cold in the winter.)

I think the relocation kit moves the lever's pivot point higher, shortening the slot needed.

Pep Boys, Car Quest, NAPA etc. has the foil type - foil on both sides sandwiching insulation. I think I've even seen it at Home Depot and the like.

Cut a sheet metal shield that can screw to the floor underneath (a tin can will work,) then a couple of loose layers of the insulation tight around the lever should do it.

I took all of the bolts losse from my console ( I think there was one in the cupholder, 2 in the console and one on the side) and slid it back about an inch and reattached it. I also moved the inner shifter boot back about an inch.

@orange05TJ:

get rid of the TC drop and install a 1" MML instead (if you donīt have a BL install it with a 1.25" BL) and your problem is gone.
i hate the ugly looking deep hanging TC plates with a TC drop.
thatīs how i would do it.

I have the mml. I needed the drop, tried it without, felt like the drive shaft was gonna fall out. Even with the 1" drop, I still have min. vibes.

weird, I had vibes even with the 2" BB, then I installed the 1.25 and mml, and they were gone. When I installed the new lift, I couldnt hold the shifter when I took off in 1st. thought it was gonna break my arm.

thatīs really weird.
i had vibes with the 2" BB and installed a 1/3" TC drop with some washers. after installing the 2.5" OME lift with 1" spacers on top there were no new vibes.
3 weeks ago i installed the 1" MML and took out the washers. it felt better then with the TC drop. i still had some 2" spacers from the old BB and installed them in the rear. and surprise! no new vibes.
for me thatīs unbelievable.. but itīs true..

but i still have the stock CAs. a buddy told me that there would be more vibes with longer CAs.

theres probably a way, but I think Im gonna take the half ass road and throw some heat insulation over the whole. Still shifts fine, just keeps my coffee hot and makes it a thrill wondering if my lighter will get hot enough to explode.

what do you mean? the shifter or what? The last pic with the shinny shifter rod is the B&M short shifter. Otherwise i have no idea..

You can also go to autozone and get a rubber boot (mounts to the tub underneath the console) so it can block the heat.

for here
