OEM roof rack on a hardtop- thoughts?

Ok, I already know that there were threads of drilling into the hardtop the pro’s/cons yes/no’s…. regardless of what is said following my post – I am still going to do it.

I purchased a 2000 Grand Cherokee roof rack from a car cemetery for $50.

1) I plan to chomp down the size to fit my hardtop about four screw points length (the holes on the sides – where the screws go)
2) Repaint the rails and cross bars
3) Fasten the rails with rubber and stainless hardware from my local Ace hardware store
4) Mount my snowboards and ride down slopes (they are probably the heaviest things that are going to be up there)

I was inspired by the extremely high cost ($351.99 just for the rails) of aftermarket racks and the instructions on how to mount them.

Also, I took pride in keeping it OEM... my fear in China's product failure is too strong

Any thoughts? Advice? Warnings?

A roof rack is on my 'infinite wish list'. Sometimes a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do. I think it looks great and its functional. Let's just keep our fingers crossed that it stays on when you've got some boards on it while driving 80mph into a head wind :-)

I did the same thing, but I took a rack off a Ford Explorer and it did not need to be cut down at all. 8 drill holes in the hard top and some stainless steel screws and it was done.

@danthebugman - I plan on using hex lock nuts, it should hold down... I hope

@doclouie - I'm assuming there's silicone in the drill holes as well? No issues with leaks? Got any pics?

I will have the finished product this weekend.

Yes just a dab of silicone around the drill holes and there has never been any leaking at all. Use clear and you will never know it is there. Check out my gallery as I have a picture of my hard top with the rack on it. Make sure and put a washer on the inside and I also used the nylon lock nuts rather than just straight split washers. I can get you some more close up pictures if you would like. Just measure twice and drill once.

Here's the finished product completed in the nick-of-time while a rain storm developed overhead.

Lost my ratchet to one of the nuts... it's because I put more silicone than Pamela Anderson

The rack is more solid than the rack that was on my XJ. You should see the hardware Jeep used to fix it on those cars - don't plan to put anything heavy on those it you got one.
