Off to the junkyard on saturday...

It's half off day at my local pick your part, I'm gonna be looking for an electric fan out of a Ford Taurus, an alternator out of a Durango, and a tie rod out of a ZJ.

Anyone know of something else I should look out for?

You could always do a home made snorkel! I dont know if your interested but it would be fun.

1- Air hat off a Cadillac with the 4.7 front wheel drive

2- Air filter hose from a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee

3- Air box (or can) from a 1988 Dodge Raider

I cant take credit for that list i got it off a write up. Its a project i have been looking forward to doing my self.

The stock TJ alternator is weak at only 90 amps, the Durango alternator is 136 amps and its a bolt up replacement.

also comes out of these
1997-1998 Dodge B.Series Van
1997-1998 Dodge Dakota
1998-1999 Dodge Durango
1997-1998 Dodge Ram Pickup
1997-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

All the things I have listed bolt right up to a TJ, except the Taurus fan, that will take a bit of modding to get in.

Those bolt up to TJ brackets? I know XJ/ZJ seats do, If I find some leather ones for cheap I might grab them.

Don't tell the junkyard guy how cool those parts will be for your Jeep, he might jack the prices up if he thinks you're doing anything but replacing busted parts.

Being a SOCAL transplant and not believing the racket that the junk yard guys seem to think they have in these parts, I can only recommend:

Price those parts new or rebuilt first! The only Jeep junkyard I know of locally is down in Chula Vista and there is practically nothing to buy from him that you couldn't get much closer to home, in a box, with a 90 day warranty.

Just my 2 cents.

The lot I'm going to is full of the cash for clunkers cars and I am not getting anything out of a wrangler. I'm only taking things that I can tell are in good shape, and that I can check the mileage on the cars. Plus, its only $13 for the alternator, $12 for the tie rod, and about $15 for the fan. I don't have much to lose here.

Cool beans. Take your cell phone and plug in the numbers for your local parts guys and if you see something else, call and get a price before you jump on anything you might not know the normal pricing of.

The Durango alternator puts out more amperage. If you ever want to run aux. lights, a winch, or a big stereo, anything that draws a lot of power; you will need a bigger alternator to keep from killing the battery.

I wish I could!

I had to put the trip off till (hopefully) next weekend. Some other stuff got in the way and I couldn't go. (Family obligations suck!)

So I missed half off day

I'll still get the stuff, I'm just going to have to spread it out. Recently got my hours cut at work (along with everyone else) But I will keep you guys updated on how everything fits when I get it!
