Question Oil Pressure Issue

I just bought a 2001 TJ. It's my first Jeep & so far I love it!!
Anyway, I have read that they are notorious for Oil sending units being flakey.
Every once & a while my check guages light comes on & the oil; pressure reads low,,,around 20. It usually is 40 or above. I know the oil guages on the newer jeeps just like give an average rather than an actual continually changing reading.
My main question is can an oil pump intermittently loose pressure? Or do they work or not work?
I haven't heard any lifter noise or anything like that. And it seems to be running fine.
I don't know how to test the oil pressure. If Oreilly's can rent me a tool to test the pressure I will try that.

Any advice would be greatly appriciated.

You can but a cheap mechanical oil guage and remove the oil sending unit and replace it with the mechanical. That is the only way I know.

Mine does the same thing. I bought a new sending unit, but haven't installed it yet... They just do go bad for some reason, and cold weather seems to make them flake out worse than warm....

Thanks for the replys, Like Inferno mine usually acts up when it is colder. When the weather warms up I'll change the sending unit after I change the oil. I have already changed the oil but since the old stuff was so dirty another change wouldn't hurt.

Changing the sending unit has nothing to do with haveing dirty or clean oil. I temperarily put a mechcanical one in mine to verifiy it was the sending unit. It worked ok, so I replaced sending unit.
Don't insult my stupidity !
