Ok, third time is the charm

So here's the deal. I've been looking for a Wrangler for a couple of months and have made a few offers, none of which panned out (dishonest sellers, bonehead mistakes and out negotiated by a last minute buyer).

I recently found another rig on ebay but I would be buying sight unseen and having it shipped from OH to MO. Does anyone here have experience with that. The one thing that makes me nervous is the mileage...170k on a 2002. so here are my main concerns if you have any thoughts i would greatly appreciate the input:
1. 2002 with 170k miles on it
2. buying sight unseen off of ebay
3. cheap transport
4. I offered $7k and the offer was accepted (verbally... there's been no exchange of money, title or contract)
* side note, a lot jeeps i've looked at have either had engine replacements, tranny replacements or both. Is this an expensive endeavor?

Here's the description from the seller

2002 Wrangler X
INTERSTATE BATTERY THAT IS 6 MONTHS OLD, NEW JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE HD FRONT STEERING LINKAGE, NEW BRAKES FRONT AND REAR, CD PLAYER, K&N AIR FILTER. THIS JEEP HAS FLAWS IN THE PAINT.A TINY CHIP IN THE WINDSHIELD, A CRACK IN ONE DOOR PANEL. AND HAS BEEN TOUCHED UP. THIS JEEP RUNS GREAT, DOESNT BURN OIL, SHIFT GREAT THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE WORKS PEFECTLY. AIR CONDITIONING WORKS GOOD ALSO. I DO NOT HAVE A REAR SEAT FOR IT BUT I HAVE THE REAR SEAT BELTS AND SEAT BRACKETS THAT COULD BE PUT BACK IN. THE FRONT SEATS ARE OUT OF A NEW CRYSTLER 2012 VAN I BELIEVE. THE JEEP ALSO HAS FRAME TIES ON THE REAR BUMPER AND MOPAR TRAILER LIGHT HARNESS SO YOU CAN TOW SMALL TRAILORS.

@Offrd... thanks homie, I appreciate the help.
@redsands... have you ever purchased a car online and had to have it shipped?

I buy a ton of crap on ebay, but never a vehicle. My reason for turning to ebay is that I've had some less then stellar buying experiences on Craigslist. I figured that at least ebay offers me buyers protection in the event that the deal is too good to be true.

I purchased a car for the wife a few years back on eBay. I couldn't find anything comparable locally to it. I actually flew from Iowa to Ohio to make the purchase. Like the others, I don't like the idea of shelling out money for something I couldn't look over. I had the seller lower the price of the vehicle to cover the amount of the plane ticket. This was after many phone conversations and additional pictures. It worked out well for me.

See if you can work out something similar. Collect as much info as you can, if ANYTHING doesn't sound or look right, walk away. But, if you get the answers and info you want and all seems well, you could have yourself a new jeep. Just be cautious.

DON'T DO IT! SPARE YOURSELF THE AGONIZING CRUD! first it says wrangler x, then it is talking about a grand cherokee? things missing, all this and that.
If you want to spend 7k on a jeep, look around a bit more. look on this site first.
NEVER, and I mean NEVER, buy a vehicle off of ebay or craigslist. Those 2 places are where people pawn their garbage.

I have a friend that buys cars from ebay all time and has never gotten a bad deal. On the other hand I just won't do it.

All those non stock parts would send me running unless I could physically inspect it! You have no clue if the work was performed properly? It's a pretty large roll of the dice for 7 grand imo. I suppose it depends on how many wranglers are in your area? I'm in Connecticut and there are tons of them for sale... I bought a cream puff 99 sahara for $4500 with A/C, new tires, new exhaust, new shocks, perfect interior with 117k! So they are out there is you're patient. The key is patience until you spot the one you want and the "price" is right! If that Jeep was such a great deal it wouldn't be on ebay imo... they are way to easy to sell local!!!

I think it's an expensive, risky deal. I got my 98 TJ with right at 90k miles on it and in great condition for less than that. Four years isn't worth another $1500 and an extra 80k miles, I don't think.

I know it's hard, but if you be patient the right jeep will come up and you'll be glad you waited!

@all....gentlemen, just wanted to thank you for all the input (side note: i joined the forum to educate myself prior to a purchase and you guys have been invaluable. I don't know what each of you make an hour, but i'm doubling your salaries...). After careful consideration, i'm walking away from the ebay deal. Jeeps seem to be heavily concentrated in a couple areas of the country and one of the members PM'd me and offered to look at a few in person for me...EFFING AWESOME. So i'm going to go that route and see what it yields.

I'll keep you posted.

I just want to add that it does not sound like a $7000 jeep. Although in the midwest states of Ark, Mo, Ks & Okla wranglers go for a premium amount.
One of my friends bought an ex-detectives Crown Vic. off ebay. He got a super deal and it was very clean. That was about 3 years ago. About 8 yrs ago another buddy bought a CJ-3B off ebay. It had the original Spruce Green paint and the only problem was leaking felt seals in the closed knuckle front axle. He paid $5k for it but it was all original and had been recently overhauled. From brakes to carb. I thought they both found really good deals.

About 2 1/2 yrs ago I shipped my baby, a 1966 CJ-5 and a very clean Mazda v-6 pickup from California to Mo. via two different carriers. Both were on time, reasonable cost, and there was zero damage to either one. So don't be too concerned about auto transport drivers. I dealt with a broker which I think everyone does, and he arranged everything. I paid him a commission, and paid the drivers directly.

Now back to flea-bay. As you know there are honest, decent sellers and there are lying scammers. Look carefully at pics, ask them to take a couple more of something that isn't clear. See how much feedback they have, and explore what options you have if anything was misrepresented. Ask questions, keep the responses till you are satisfied with the deal.
If the seller is slow to respond or will not take additional pics, then forget it. You will find the jeep you have been looking for, and the one that will make you happy. Keep your eyes peeled and your mind open. If it doesn't feel right, pass on it.
