I've tried the search and talked to a few members but i have to ask.

I have a 97 tj and Im looking for a new front set up. I found a 2000 xj 4.0 sport for parts locally but the owner thinks its a lp30. The price is right...how can i confirm?

If this isn't a hp30 what years should i look for?

The owner thinks it's a LP 30 because in 2000, Jeep started putting the LP 30 in the XJ. Pre 2000 would be a good place to start looking.

1995 to 1999 Cherokees will have the non-disconnect HP axle with the larger 297 u-joints used in the TJ.

How about Grand Cherokee limiteds? Same thing right?

GCs use the same low pinion as the TJ and most of those have expensive to repair cv style u-joints.
A high pinion is easy to identify by sight. The pinion yoke is above the center line of the axle shafts.

Damn I cant win....had one cheap and the whole damn jeep for 800 if I wanted but I dont wanna spend 800 to try and part or flip it, I just want a HP30! Lol.

The emotional roller coaster goes up again...

Found a local guy who works at a shop with a 1997 sport that was T boned. Perfect working drive train including the HP30. Drove it, 4wd works and drove well. 100 bucks plus my d30 and he will do the swap with me at the shop.

All goes well Ill have my HP30 in on wed.

What about the gear ratio? Cherokees generally came with 3.54s were as TJs came in 3.07 or 3.73 unless you got a rubi then u'd have 4.10s.

Maybe expensive to repair but not expensive to replace, I just replaced both cv axles on my son's zj and the axles were only $69 bucks each complete.

Gear ratio is the only thing that didnt work out "perfect" but Im not too worried about it...here is my plan and please tell me if Im about make a mistake.

I have 3.07s and desperately need a regear. this hp30 has 355. i was going to swap it in and drive it home (all2wd) and the jeep would sit for about 3 weeks until i can swap in the ford 8.8(410s) and regear the front to 4.10s at the same time.
