One more tire question (please!)

I've searched the forum and read the various tire/lift questions but still need help. I guess I'm just not getting it. My son has a 2000 TJ, stock height, with 31x10.50 BF Goodrich tires. They look too small to both of us. It's time to buy new ones and he wants to go with a 33" or 34". I guess that would be a 265 size. I saw an 06 with 265 tires that I think was at stock height but don't really know. My question is whether that size tire will fit under a stock TJ suspension such that he could drive it that way a while. He plans to get a suspension lift but wants to wait a month or two. If the Jeep would have to be lifted what would he need? 2" or greater? This Jeep doesn't do any serious off roading and it is a daily driver. I know this subject is getting old but I appreciate any help from the experts.

For 15" wheels like he has, you can stop worrying about metric sizes and stick with inches. For an unlifted Wrangler TJ, the biggest size that can be installed without rubbing is a 31x10.50 tire. Anything bigger and wider he needs a lift and aftermarket wheels with less backspacing to position the tires out a tad more.

For 33" tires, a 3" suspension lift is the absolute minimum for street use but 4" is actually the recommended size if he ever goes offroad.

Thanks Jerry. I forgot to mention that he does have after market rims and the tires do stick out past the fender wells a good bit already. Mud and water sling everywhere. It looks like we could use 33's with probably a three inch lift. All of this stuff gets overwhelming for first time Jeep owners.

I know I am going to suffer for contradicting Jerry Please understand that Jerry knows EVERYTHING about Jeeps, and I have nothing but respect for his knowledge and willingness to share it. But....... I have 33's on my TJ with 2" coil spacers. I've only had them for a month, and my Jeep has seen nothing but pavement with this set up. The first time I take it offroad, I may be singin' the blues..... I do have aftermarket wheels with 4" bs.... I know this is not the recommended set up, and knew it when I did it, so if I screw up, I have no one to blame but myself.

Thanks Inferno girl. I wish I had thought to add that he had aftermarket rims when I first posted. I don't know the offset but the 31's stick out three inches or so from the fender wells. I know he should get the tires and lift at the same time but he wants to space it out. The 31's look awful small on this Jeep so I know it'd look silly to use them with a lift. It may be that he can get 33's and use coil spacers until he gets the lift. He doesn't take this Jeep offroad. I doubt what you're doing is ideal for off roading but it's a great idea and might work for us. I tried to pull up your avatar to get a closer look but don't know how to do it.

2" spacers are really not recommended for 33" tires, 3" is barely enough. You're still my friend InfernoGirl, just drive slow over the bumps & dips in the road.

You can run 32s with no lift or a leveling 3/4" spacer in the front. You can run 33s with a 2" BB and bumpstops. Heck, you can run 40s at stock height with a sawzall. I ran 32s and a 3/4" level spacer for 3 years as a DD and mild trail rig. Went to a 3" short arm kit and ran the same 32s, then 35s. Now I run 37s on a 5.5" lift with a 10" WB stretch. Soon to be swapping out my front D44 for a D60 and fitting 39-40s with no more lift than I have now. Rear wheel wells are trimmed back(comp cut) but not up at all. Front has no fenders anymore, but a flatfender job would still clear my 37s.

It is the stock gearing that is going to kill him. 33s are going to suck the power out of the rig, and kill the MPG. Even if he has 3.73s. 34s would be horrible.

Yeah, I know about the gas mileage and power problem. But he's got it to do. We've been through all that with a '93 toyota PU. He has a 3.73 axle with the 6 cyl engine. Right now he's thinking 33's with a 4" lift. Rough Country, I think. Anybody have any thoughts on Rough Country. I've read some reviews, both good and bad. I think the Jeep is fine like it is but I'm old. Most of the Jeeps we see around here are lifted and have bigger tires. They do look better.

Ok Hank, here's a pic of mine with no lift after I put 33's on....


And after my 2" coil spacers.... And yes, I'm old and I drive like a grandma, I just like to look good when I do it!

hey infernogirl, how are you liking the duratracs? i had them on 31's but found that i punctured them WAY too easily. i was plugging a tire at least once a week from rock punctures. it was always in the sipping on the outer lugs most of the time. others was on the middle tread blocks, but also the sipping

other than puncturing them i love them, would take me anywhere i them wanted to.

Well Crazy, I have only had them a month and haven't taken them offroad yet, but they perform well on the street, and in the snow so far. I love the way they look I hope I don't have problems puncturing them.... (especially since I don't have a spare).....
