Question Open Round Filter?

I have not seen this brought up in any jeep forums before, but what is the reasoning behind not using a open element round air filter? I see alot of cones on the end of the stock tube, but is there a reason you cant just put some breathers on the valve cover and put a big'o round filter with like a 3" stack coming from the throttle body? I had a 90 gmc sierra with a 350 before my tj and was able to run one without problem. What I am getting to is, why dont people do this, is water an issue or is there something else?

while im thinking, why not put a cone filter right onto the throttle body? - Im not real big on the tech side of this so im probly wrong and there is a reason but im just curious.

Alot of us run the cold air intakes. And its also the reason the stock intake box is away from the throttle body. Cold air induction raises hp and torque slightly and increase gas mileage. Most of your 350s and up dont really care what kind of air they get as long as theres alot of it. IF you dropped a cone on the top of the TB or a stack type, you would be gettin hot air right off the intake and exhaust manifold and water would be much easier to induct right into your throttle body instead of having to go into the box, up the gooseneck and then down to the throttle body. I run in alot of water and bogs and i can vouch that jeeps dont make good submarines. But thats just my idea of it. Im sure the jeep gods will add some info.

I just bought a 99 that has a filter running right on the top of the throttle body. it seems fine for me. I dont run any bogs or hit a whole lot of water, so thats not an issue. there is a small whistle from the filter just as you push on the gas. after a little acceleration the small whistle disappears. i dont know if this is what all the round filters do or not, as i have never had one before.
i also wondered if this position was beneficial or detrimental to the air it sucks in. maybe i can snap a pic tomorrow and throw it up here to show you. cheers.

As I thought about what some of you said about this setup, I was trying to figure what type of air (temperature-wise) this was getting. There is indeed some warmer air that would get ingested by the filter from the engine heat, but there is also cool air coming in from the back of the hood from the vents. It may not be much, but I would also think a small hood scoop right over these vents would allow more cold or cooler air to enter the filter in this area.
I'm just kind of thinking out loud here, and anyone who has other ideas is welcome to chime in...

you'll want to move that filter,your going to get too much hot air even with the scoop.you can use a cold air intake from a civic to move it up and back to where the colder air is under the hood.82-95 civic i think.around $50.someone here had a link to show how to make a hidden snorkel going thru the firewall,increases HP and gas milage as well.

I allways thought a civic pipe looks similar to the wrangler pipe. The miata pipes are even better since they curve on both sides but still just like a civic the miata intake piping is 2.5 or 2.75". Anyhow i gues this weekend i will install it somehow.

btw what diameter is the outside of the throttle body?
I'm guessing 3" but still wondering.

OK... Where would be the optimal area under the hood to have the cone intake? i.e. where is the coolest air under the hood?

my question relates to the fact that I have an electric fan behind my radiator. This means I have a TON of room right in front of where the original engine fan was. would that be a good place for the cone filter? would I be getting optimal "cool" air?

Currently its raining like crazy but hopefuly this weekend it will be somewhat nice weather so i can look around in there. I'm guessing stock location of the box might be the best.

I just installed it and it sounds sweet. I cannot say anything about performance since I havnt gotten a good chance to do so. The jeep seems to be running a bit smoother at idle and you can hear the air rushing through. Also it sits few inches higher than stock filter. I have quite many pics on my car domain. Check it out.

Time to make it look nice. I'm now digging in the letters with my dremel tool and will paint it after wards. Black pipe with red letters. ill post more pics when i finish

I can't speak from actual knowledge, just tech stuff I have read. Supposedly there are two reasons for not doing it.

1. Being cooler air.

2. There is supposed to be something to do with fluid dynamics and the way the air moves through the tube to squeak out more performance. I don't know how much that is supposed to hold true for the stock setup but that is the word behind aftermarket manufacturers designs.

Personal observation of a friends Jeep... didn't notice any difference, but it did clear out a lot of stuff under the hood.

I did have the intake installed for some time and i did notice better response. With the stock intake (which i have now) its sluggish when you step on the gas while with the intake it seems like it picks up a lot faster. I am thinking of some kind of a heat shield later on.



BTW i did replace the yellowish pipe with 5/8" so that should fit perfecty instead of the 1/2 that i have on the pic.

i want to do something like this but i am not sure how to do it, it would be like a snorkel but it would not stop you from putting the windshield down or taking off the doors.

if any1 has done this or has ideas on how to do it then please tell me



sorry this is the only place i have ever seen it and do not know the name of it to search it, (it is to the left of the hood)

I can see how it would keep you from putting down the windshield, but how does it keep you from taking off the doors?

I saw a jeep with something like this on it, but it was not an intake for the engine. It was a filtered air source for the HVAC outside air. Somewhere there is a write-up on how to do this without the filter sticking up through the cowl.

the snorkel just barely goes over where the hinges are so you need to take the snorkel off to get the doors off at least an ARB safaria one does.

any idea where i could find this site you speak of, this site, pirate 4x4???? where????

I gues it will make some difference?
Do the winshield/roof lights interfier with the window and the doors? If not you can put a pipe up that has an filter up there. You can check out that movie mischief dynasty it has a wrangler with the filter by the roof.

the black pipe with the wrighting is 3" interior and 3.5 outside diameter. i belive its a pvc pipe.. its 12" long (keep in mind my filter is from ebay.. 3.5 opening and its 9" long and not the 6 or so the standard cone filters are). The elbow is 3" Inside diameter and the ends enlarge to 3.5 ID, at last the goldish piece at the end of the black pipe is 5/8" diameter and that is the breather piece for the valve cover.
The goidish piece should be 2" from the side so it doesnt interfier with the black elbow, on mine its like 1" so its in the way. If you need any info at all let me know.. pm or just post here
