Operation De-chrome

Well, the previous owner had an obsession with chrome. Hinges, grill, bumpers, light covers and fuel door.

Some before and afters. I was happy with the way it came out. Thanks to those that have posted theirs for me to get some good pointers and ideas.

I can't even imagine what tires for 19" rims must cost.

Nice job on the de-chroming. I laugh every time I see the "chrome accessory" page in Quadratec.

I'm not sure the cost on them, the PO is the one who purchased. I am more of a stock ruby alloys with big nobby tires. I really dig that look, but thats not really in the budget atm.

The Jeep I'm buying this week is pretty chromed out as well. I thought about replacing the chrome but yours looks pretty nice painted. Did you get a local body shop to paint it or did you do it yourself?

Cool. Any problems with it flaking off? I'm tempted to just sell the bumpers to someone local and buy black ones.

Aslong as you put enough coats of clear on it it should stand up to some, but not all nicks. I actually bought a stock bumper incase it did, just wanted to try my luck at painting the old one first.

Even if you have to repaint it 17 times a month I would still say it was/is worth the effort. Chrome and Jeep = words I can't type here because someone would be offended. Your rig looks about 100 without the shiny stuff.

This is probably true if you are very rough on it. I sanded it pretty well in hopes that it would. *fingers crossed*

I also have the chrome grill. What is the best way to make it NOT CHROME! Any specific prep or paint work best?

Thanks

Mine was a chrome grill cover, I just removed and scuffed it up with some sandpaper the best i could.. Layers of primer and then layers of Flat black. After that i went over it with a Matte Clear coat.

Next on the agenda, I've got an SRC bumper and black hinges on order probably delivered mid next week. Got some interest in trading my hard top for a soft top + hardware so I'll be getting that going soon. Its New Mexico so a soft top will be more enjoyable for me.

Now you have to paint the rims black.
I bought a set of 16" steel jeep liberty rims for my winter tires and painted them black, I really like the look. I used gloss black and maybe should have used matte.
