opinions on half doors for a TJ

My plan is to take off the hardtop and go Safari for the summer.
My question is do you think half doors or no doors is better? I have to admit it seems like having an arm rest on the half door would be comfortable. It seems just a little safer too.
How hard is it to find half doors? Is there any chance to find some for my ’99 that are already stone white with tan inside?
What are your opinions?

Mike

i prefer no doors. you dont really need the arm rest, i have 5 speed so my left hand is on the wheel anyway. i have the half doors with the glass slider windows as well, but the no doors looks so much better in my opinion. as for saftey, as long has you have your seatbelt on and you are not driving like a moron then you'll be fine. you could try quadratec to find some, but save the money and just take the doors off.

You can fit half doors from any TJ 97-06 on your '99. I suck at statistics, so I can't say what the odds are that you'll find what you want. I too have half doors and love them... Much lighter to remove than full doors, and IMO they look better, especially with the top down or off... But no doors is wayyyyyy cooler, in every sense of the word.. I take mine off when it's not too windy or cool out, as Mike mentioned, they keep rain off, they don't keep you any safer, neither do full doors. Just like the sticker says.

I use the full doors in the winter with the hardtop , I have a safari and soft half doors for when I get tired of the Soft top in warmer weather. I also have had my eye out for some stone white half doors with drk gray int but have not come across them yet. I like the option of being able to throw some windows in in a hurry only because of bad weather, been wet to many times. with so many top and door options it looks like a different Jeep a few times a year so I will have it longer .

Yes those ARE locks on the handles. They're there to keep people from stealing your doors.

You can also add enclosures, bags and upper doors to these to create 1/2 doors.

Half doors came on mine, so I use those for DD in the warm months during the week, pull them off and go doorless on the weekends. (lots of interstate driving) I purchased full doors for the winter, just so I didn't have to deal with soft uppers for drive thrus in the cold months.

But half-doors are by far my faves.

I have had the full doors on since October, and I STILL keep trying to put my elbow where the half doors should be. But having roll-down windows is nice.

Im ready for warm weather.

On my LJ, I've full doors but like running with no doors in the summer on the road but on the trail, I swap in a set of tube doors like the photo above. On the trail I like the feeling that "something" is helping to keep my fat carcass in my rig. On the JK, I have the half doors and those are pretty cool. Makes things easy to see, easy to take off the top part, etc. What you might want to do is just watch for deals on craigslist as you might be able to find a set for pretty cheap. I got my tube doors for $100

Wow! tons of great responses! Thanks everyone.
I will have to look into those element doors, if they are not too expensive I might go that route.
I have been searching Craigslist alot and there are not a whole lot of wrangler doors around. I have a few months to figure it out though.

Thanks again everyone!

I know where I live (British Columbia, Canada), it's illegal to drive without doors. Infact there's supposedly a cop nearby that makes it his duty to target doorless Jeeps. Reasons given: need sideview mirrors, and structural integrity. I have half doors for that reason.

I can see the need for side view mirrors, but structural integrity? You should show the cop that sticker above your windshield.

My 06 came with full doors and I have never liked the look being so much taller than the tub rail. Instead of buying 1/2 doors, I decided to go with the element doors. I am virtually building my own 1/2 doors one piece at a time and the versatility is awesome.

I bought half doors with uppers off Craigslist. I like to keep the half doors on and carry the uppers, for example in Moab you can be way out on a trail somewhere and big storms can come up fairly suddenly and soak you pretty good when you aren't planning on it, then you just pop on the uppers. Half doors let you see your driver side tire placement.

I bought black half doors, they are pretty common to find. and go well with my color (Khaki), and I think just leave them black because they go well with almost any other color, like blacked out trim. Half doors let you stay legal, as mentioned earlier. I still put my full doors back on for winter road driving.

I found half doors in my color, inside and out, on craig's list. Little over 300 bucks. Waiting for summer so I can put them on. Until then, full doors for me. UR

I realize this post is really old, but I just wanted to share with you that, if you are patient enough (and lucky enough), sometimes you can find exactly what you are looking for, on Craigslist.

I picked up MY half doors on Craigslist for $300.
And they were exactly what mdimdi was searching for.
White doors with tan panels.

My doors are being painted glossy black (I should have them back in a few days), & I intend to paint the inner panels green to match my interior.

Seeing as how this post is very old, you have probably already found the doors you were looking for. There are so many choices of options when it comes to TJs, it just takes a little bit of looking (and/or a little bit of driving) to find what you want.

Since one of the inner door lock mechanisms was missing, I ordered both the left & the right locking mechanisms. I've already received them, just waiting for the doors to be finished being painted. (I figured, as long as I am tearing down the door to a level so that it can be properly painted, I might as well go ahead & replace BOTH mechanisms now, so that I won't have to do this again, any time soon.)
