Optima

Another 3 year old Optima bites the dust. My Jeeping partner Mike had his Optima crap out this morning. Battery was right at the 3 year old mark. Was fine yesterday and this morning flat bad. Too bad. I have 4 of them that are varying ages less than 3. Wish I had read about them on this forum before I bought. My buddy ordered the Die Hard to replace the Optima.

I almost bought an Optima. Had one years ago (on my YJ), then read here that the quality went south when the manufacturing "went South"
….I bought a Die Hard Platinum

Seriously? I just researched this forum a month ago and couldn't find a bad review. I just got a yellow top like. 2 weeks ago :/ do they just tend to die out in a few years or what?!

There are probably at least a hundred or more negative Optima reviews. Optima used to make a superb battery, then JCI (Johnson Controls Inc.) bought them out and moved all of their manufacturing to Mexico. It's my strongest possible personal opinion that their quality and reliability has been mixed at best, poor in general.

I went through three Optima batteries that all failed prematurely, two Yellow Tops and one Blue Top. Never again will I buy another Optima battery.

The battery that has taken off like a wildfire in terms of acceptance, popularity among Jeep owners, and quality/reliability is the Diehard Platinum which is an AG battery made for Sears by Odyssey. It's a superb battery, I installed my first Diehard Platinum 4+ years ago, am running another in my current TJ, and I'm so much more happy with it than I ever was with my Optimas. Heck I was always having to recharge the Optimas, I've yet to have to recharge my Diehard Platinum.

Finally, the same Group 34 size Diehard Platinum weighs nearly 10 lbs. more than the same Group 34 size Optima Yellow Top or Blue Top does. The reason being that the Diehard Platinum has significantly more battery in the same exterior dimensioned case. The below illustration shows why...

Diehard Platinum/Odyssey on the left, Optima on the right.

The only problem I had with the Die Hard is that the stock hold-down for my `04 TJ doesn't fit right.
However, I was finally able to find a hold-down that fits: Hold Down for Sears Die-Hard Platinum 34/78DT

I bought the platinum after advice from this forum, been living in below zero temperatures , even left the dome light ob for over ten hours while I was at work. It cranked right up, I feel even though pricey .. Monet well spent.

The top of the Die-Hard tapers so it's a bit smaller at the top. My stock tie-down worked, but I had to shift it a bit to keep the battery in place. The stainless steel hold down I bought fits perfectly (you can see what I mean in the pic's I linked in my prior post)

That's a real bummer! I guess I should have done more research. I guess I'll put my jumper cables back in the jeep now lol! Hopefully it'll hold up ok for a few years then I'll upgrade.

The Optima is really a lot about marketing. I was attracted to them because they were AGM, and they look really cool. Different colors, unusual design, just unique. Seemed like the way to go. Too bad they were so good to start with and now they are not.

I had an optima in a truck of mine that sat for a year went out and it started right up. But if they sold out to a different manufacturer then I'm sure the quality suffered. That's a shame too because I really liked my old optima. This was probably ten years ago. I think I'm gonna go with the die hard platinum as well.

You would not regret that decision. Especially that the Diehard Platinum has a 48 month free replacement warranty and a 100 month prorated warranty. Compare that to Optima's 12 month free replacement and 36 month prorated warranty that is voided if the dealer sees that you connected a winch to it.
