Overheating TJ

My 97 sport with 4.0, 150,000 miles was running hot in traffic, I understand it is somewhat normal, but it also pulled enough coolant to nearly fill the resevoir, then it cooled off and emptied out. I had the coolant changed about 2000 miles ago. Should I change the cap and thermostat, cheap way to start? Another issue is when it is turned off you can hear what sounds like water running in the rear of the engine compartment, is this the heater core?
