Overpriced??

Is this a good deal? What should I offer??

1997 JEEP Wrangler Sahara. 129K miles. Soft top, 6 cylinder, 5 speed, air conditioning. 5.5 inch Rubicon Express long arm lift with rear tri-link. 37 inch Good Year mtr's, 4.56 gears, 4:1 transfercase. Arb lockers front and rear. Rancho RS 9000 shocks. Rear Dana 44, warne winch, full size spare, custom roll cage and jet chip. Optima battery and Tomken rock slides. $10,900.

I'm a complete n00b to Jeeps, not even sure if this is the right forum.

This is the right forum and welcome. The question being is how hard has is been wheeled? What does NADA/KBB say? Obviously they wont give you extra for all the add ons, but starting place, especially if your getting a loan for it.
Just a thought!

I sold our bone stock 97 with 60k miles on it, in very good condition, hard/soft tops, full and half doors, 6cly, auto, dana 35 rear. for $9300 about 2 years ago. I would say depending on what condition its in, was it wheeled, or is all that for just looks. With 37's certain stock drive train parts get are getting taxed, even if it was not taken off road. Get KBB price, but would say if a good looking jeep with some good mods price is okay, but really depends on condition, as that could drop the price to 5-7k or 7-8k.

tj models before year 2000 go for less than 8k around here, 97's typically around 3-5K. it all depends on where you are and what you'll pay for other peoples junk.

I'm assuming "wheeled" means serious off-road....yes, I get the feeling this rig has been "wheeled" a lot!

Here's the pic from the ad:

Only pic I have....

This is from a private party.

NADA says:
  • Low Retail - $6875
  • Clean Retail - $8275
  • High Retail - $9025

He's asking $10,900.

My main concern is the high mileage (129K)...should I be worried??

Thanks for the advice!! Very much appreciated!

That depends on what you wanna pay and if you buy a stock one, how much are you gonna pay to modify it.

Where are you located? You might want to check local jeep clubs, some guys might have leads on rigs for sale.

where i live that is very cheap. I got mine for 13k stock a year and a half ago (2000 sport model with 41k miles, now its 50ish).. i'm planning on putting it up for sale after i take it wheeling at least once (the trip is in 2 weeks)

The reason for my desicion is i got the rig, i did a lot of work on it, spent more than 3k and i'm not having any fun because i have no where to wheel it I think i'll have much more fun in a turbo na or nb Roadster.

I would take it to a mechanic and have it looked over top to bottom. Make sure that nothing is broken underneath and that the motor is solid. If this was used hardcore, the mechanic should be able to tell you if it is worth the $$$. It seems a little high to me for that model year, but its what your willing to pay.

I'd be a little careful. Where does he say he has this custom roll cage at? In the picture it looks like it a stock one. He has the full size spare 37" w/steel wheel on the tailgate? Hmmm Does it have a hardtop and doors to go with it?

Just a thought.

Thanks again for all the advice!!

That's the problem...I'm such a n00b I don't know how much is too much or how much the mods are worth.

How about the 6 cyl...too many miles??

Would you take it to a dealer or an independent? What should I expect to pay a mechanic to look it over?

On the rig...

Yes.

Yes, both.

I'm thinking of offering him $9000...would that just be an insult, or not out of line?

I would pay 9 for it. Just make sure he has what he says on it. Ask for work order/reciepts and what not. IMO that really looks alot like the stock roll cage. What do ya'll think? Trip 2x: stock tailgate + 37" on steel wheel = not so good.

37's on the tailgate is really bad! It can rip it off!
$9000 still seems High for a first offer in my opinion!
As for the roll bar it looks like he re-enforced the front stock roll bar at the windshield!
I would not offer more then $7500
Look at e-bay for an idea of what they actually go for, you can see what has sold in the last couple of weeks and for what. That can give you a better idea!
I bought my 03 in November with a 4 inch lift, classic II wheels, 49K miles, automatic, never been wheeled---for $9500
So look around!
If you are a newbie you might want to start with something W/ Lower miles and less upgrades this would equal fewer problems. Just my opinion though.
Also does he have a SYE on it?
Good luck!

that thing woulda been sold already @ $7500 here in my neck of the woods.
alot depends on where in the country you live. look around locally and see what comparable jeeps go for. try autotrader, either the magazine or online, or better yet both. i wouldnt feel $9K is an insult. but check first to see whats what where you live.

there are a lot of goodies on that thing.

have you been talking with the guy selling it? if not do. get a few conversations in with him. try to get an honest answer out of him just how hard hes been on the thing. maybe not just ask straight up, but kinda shoot the shit with him and see if you can just beat it around the bush to get a few answers out of him.

take it in and have someone look at it, NOT a dealer. find a good 4X4 shop, and ask them. when i bought mine, i took it to TeraFlex and they charged me $65 i believe to do an entire "pre-purchase vehicle inspection" it covered a lot of your basic stuff, but i also had them go back and physically show me things on the jeep. a good shop should point out all the good along with the bad for ya.

good luck, keep us posted. im curious

yeah but you got it at 50k miles.. this rig has close to 130k.. 3 years older and a motor with less hp.. and has seen dirt

dont feel bad trip.. I dont really get a chance to take it out much either.. but maybe after the wheeling trip you may change your mind.. Heck I say a 2week wheeling trip once a year is enough to keep the jeep. if you have fun during the trip..

I would have sold mines already if I was not still paying for it.. just for the same reason as you.. not using it much.. but me having a roadster=trouble. maybe worse than a bike.

Sounds too high IMO for the mileage and such. The equipment sounds good but the seller really can't expect to get back on his investment of upgrades that much. I paid $16,000 for a 2004 with 18,000 miles with hard and soft tops, 4.0 L, pretty much stock otherwise, with a 100,000 Jeep warranty. I would keep looking.
