Paint Repair

I have had some paint damage that was done by the previous owner whether it was completely accidental or carelessness I have no idea. The most noticeable is a ding about the size of a dime on my hood. It chipped off the paint but not all the way down to the metal just the primer. By the windshield there are a couple more smaller dings that are starting to rust. Finally nearly covering the front of my hood are numerous marks that can only be described as check marks. Almost like slits in the paint. Very hard to explain. Pics are attached for a better view. Any ideas on how I can patch up or repair any of it? I have some rust neutralizer and a touch up pen from the stealership but I don't even know where to start. It doesn't look bad from 5-10 feet away but on closer inspection it looks kind of sketchy. Any help is welcomed. Thanks.

The slits are the clear coat cracking from the sun and age. Stripping and repainting are the only solution for that I know of. For the rest sand it down if it's rusty and repainting again seems the right way to fix it.

you can cover the old paint and just paint a section then blend in. it wont look 100% but still better than painting the whole Jeep.

I guess a nice coat of wax won't help too much?

You might be able to wet sand those cracks to fade them. As for the chips, you can fix those with touch up paint, but make sure you treat the rust first.

Gah not exactly what I wanted to hear. I can live with the checking for now. But I'm afraid rust is going to take over so I guess I better take care of that. What would happen if I neutralize it, sand it down so its smooth, and paint over it?

Also apparently the checking is from age? Well I believe you but just out of curiosity why does our 97 ford expedition have nearly pristine paint yet my 04 jeep is checking? Is it the quality of paint or neglect or what?

to neutralize the rust take a small grinder or some corse sand paper and sand/grind the rust off. then take an etching primer and put it on the bare metal. then brush touch it with ur touch up paint. this wont be a perminant fix but will be ok for a while. my 2005 hood is checked on mine as well. it could be just the age or the sun attached it, the paint could be to thick and overtime cracked, the type of paint, many of things. my gues it type of paint.
