Light coating of clear coat will help with the scratches.

Any tricks for masking off the part that's orange and the tire?

I took the rock guards off to paint them orange and took all the little bolts that hold them on off and painted each one black, and for the rims I used masking tape, newspapper and alot of patience.

They arent hard to find at all man they are just beadlock look rims there are about a thousand manufacturers making them. Google "mickey Thompson classic lock" ones they even have changable colored lock rings. Not knocking them, I think they are great looking rims for someone who likes beadlock look without beadlock function

Those look really good i just finished repainting my mt classic locks mine were really pitted and now i would say they look good from 10 feet and farther but not so great closer than that i might have missed this but were yours pitted at all and if they were did your method help them out. i just used green scotch bright and acetone before painting them since they are going to be used off road and will probably get more damaged in time

They are somewhat pitted, my method would prob. help, its according to what part your having trouble with, if it is runs, your pretty much goint to have to take the tire's off and light coats.

my biggest issue is the pitting which after finishing im assuming an etchable primer would have probably helped to fill...knowing me i will have to end up doing them again next year so im going to try to have a better game plan next time ill try to get a picture up so you can see the pitting

Thats exactly the prob. the etching primer will fill in all the scratches and make a nice and smooth coat for paint.

Ok so in the close up picture you can somewhat see the pitting I have. My wheels had pitting and rock rash and looked worn out and old. The color choice was something I just thought might look good and I'm pretty happy with it. I painted mine by removing the ring breaking down the top bead and stuffing drop cloth between the wheel and tire. From there I just sanded the wheel with scotch bright and cleaned the wheel pre paint with acetone. Then I put around 3 coats of paint and two of clear coat. I still need to order new center caps and have black lug nuts on order.

Very cool thanks for the pictures. You'll end up redoing them next year for a change or because the paint will be wearing off? The only thing I'm hesitant about is how long the paint will last. I usually don't gash the wheel on rocks so I think ill be fine. And if I do I guess I can deal with a little paint chip. If prep is done good, on average how long will the paint last? Through next winters mud?

i will probably redo mine because right now i am happy with them but with the pitting i do have by next year i am sure i will be ready for an improvement. I have painted another set of stock wheels before but i used a red primer and painted them black without a clear coat so every scratch i got they looked really bad. we will have to see how they hold up with a clear coat. so far they look the same as when i painted them about a month ago so they seem to be holding up ok

I have pitting too on my wheels too:/ but I think I'm just going to stick with painting the ring so I should be alright as long as I prep properly. Shouldn't be too bad. Once I do it I'll post the results here but it will be later this week hopefully Thursday.
