Painted Undercoat Rubicon?

Looking at a 2005 Rubicon at a dealer lot. In good shape but has some pointers indicating trail rig. Compressor/hose hookups front and back, aftermarket lockers and the norm tires lift stinger etc. Dont know much about rust but see some surface rust underneath. The dealer undercoats all their jeeps with some type of black spray. Pulled carfax and its been registered within 40 miles of me its whole life (2005) where we dont get snow salt etc. is paintef undercoat a sign of bad things? No body rust, holes etc. thanks

If that is aluminum corner armor, I would expect rust underneath it, unless the owner removes it every year and touches up the paint. Electrolytic corrosion happens when dissimilar metals are joined, and in this case, steel loses.

The other thing I would look for is internal frame rust. If you or somebody you know has a borescope, stick it in a frame hole and inspect for rust. If the first owner was fond of fording rivers and immersing the frame, you will see that inside the frame.

Is that hardtop painted gray, or just really faded?

Thanks. Dealer spraying underside is suspect to me but you just see orange rusty parts like power steering box etc. but I might not know rust from squat. Yes the hardtop is gray. Is faded but not black that faded...assuming aftermarket paint.
