Painting Stock Rims

I don't know if this is a dumb question or not, but I like black rims on a jeep, I think it makes it look meaner. My question is, has anyone ever painted their stock rims black? If so, any suggestions on how to do this and what I should use for paint to make them look good would be appreciated.

I had a friend do his. He scuffed them up very very well with sandpaper and then just used black hubcap/wheel paint. After you scuff them be sure to blow them off well and maybe even use brake cleaner to make sure that all of the dust is completely off.

Rustoleum has a product called High Performance Wheel paint for just that application. Then you can optionally spray on a few coats of their High Performance Wheel Clear Coat. His wheels have stood up to some pretty serious offroading, although he is hesitant to go in deep mud. I am sure they would need some touching up after spinning in deep mud.

After the time and effort put in you might just be better off saving your penny's to get some soft 8's that are black. They are like 46 bucks a rim.

They looked and still look great. I will see if I can get a picture for you. He has stock alloy wheels from 1999 with the 5 round hole pattern.

I just painted my stock rims, headlight bezels, grill inserts and flares last weekend. It went from this:

to this:

My buddy and I did the whole job in two evenings. We just took our time. We took the tires off the Jeep (but left them on the wheels) and cleaned the wheels as thoroughly as we could. We scuffed the wheels with steel wool and hit them with some acetone.

We didn't even bother masking off the tires. The over-spray was minimal.

Oh, and we used Rustoleum semi-gloss black. We used Krylon flat black for the flares and accents up front.

I was extremely pleased with the outcome.

There were some really hideous American Racing rims on my jeep when i bought it...i mean horrible...they were like silver with a black swirl through them. I painted them black...the paint itself looks good, but you can def. tell they were just ugly rims that someone tried to paint...but oh well, better then before...and it'll get me by for a few months until i buy some new rims...But i just lightly sanded mine, washed them off real good, used some primer, then painted them...but i just did it about a week ago, so i dunno how well the paints gonna stay on there...

I recently painted my entire grill and headlight bezels with Rustoleum Truck bed paint. Flat Black, with the grit in it. (Rest of the Jeep is Patriot Blue) I was hesitant at first, but after sanding a small spot on my grill, I decided I couldn't turn back now. It turned out looking very, very good. If I can ever get a pic of it, I'd like to show how it turned out.
I was interested in painting my Canyon wheels black, but found those Cragar $46 rims in Quadratec. I can deal with the Canyon's until money becomes available.
MWMOON, that turned out real nice...Looks sharp, I think.

I painted my rims black over the weekend, threw the tires out of balance, stripped the paint back off and its fine now. Im just leaving the rims the way they are for now.

Im not kidden. Took it for a drive after I painted the rims black, and if I had some milk and icecream, I could have made a milkshake the s.o.b. shook and wobbled so bad. (yes, the wheels were tight), spent 3 more hours stripping the wheel paint back off and the Jeep rode smooth again. Weird.

OK Orange, thats just odd. Your jeep has resisted every mod you have done to it.

bright aluminum

some while painting

after painting

It is in no way a major upgrade but at least i get to spend time on my Jeep therapy

Hmmmmm, maybe you didnt have an even spray, or put more coats on another rim than the others But seriously if that really happened pretty strange i must say!

I painted my rims in two days. used Rustoleum gloss paint and Rustoleum clearcoat. then got them balanced with the weights on the inside only. worth the time it looks awesome.
