i just wanted to add some thought to this. im 19, parents never bought a car/truck just for me. i always had to share it with either my dad or one of my sisters. im the youngest of the three.

the jeep was the first vehicle i have ever purchased except for the 77 cheorkee, which was given to me by an old family friend. im glad that you paid for half of your jeep. as far as your dad goes, im sort of the same way. im always working. i have to, i was laid off a month ago and now i am working my ass off just to keep the jeep.

As for driving with the top and doors off, well, yes i love it. if you live in the rural part of texas i would recommend at least buying half doors for your jeep. the reason for this is that i was heading out to a local lake here in KS doing about 75 on the highway speed limit 70, just put the top and doors back on because of a chance of rain.

I make it 5 miles from my house and a 2 deer walks out in front of me. i hit the brakes and barely clipped it. the head hit the the drivers fender and the body smacked the door, if i still had the doors off then i probably would not of made it to my destination at the lake, but instead it could have been as bad as a destination 6 feet under. there is a hoof mark at the bottom of the door, and another in front of the rear flare on the bottom of the quarter panel.

just some fuel for thought. i do know that my doors will VERY rarely come off until i buy some half metal doors.

I think that maybe...just maybe....If you show some patience and understanding for why your dad won't let you go doorless, he might succomb to your wishes later down the road. Just drop the whole subject with him, and carry on with what you're allowed to do. Don't bug him about it, don't bring it up when "Johnny" get's to take his doors off, and don't try to be extra nice cause he'll catch on pretty quick to that.
It will be cold soon enough and you won't want your doors off until next spring...by then, maybe your dad will see paitence has been instilled. GOOD LUCK!!

Since you picked me, no harm intented. I've seen so many young kids getting spoiled these days. Your parents should be proud of you as well as yourself for paying for the Jeep.

As fas as what dwd said:
and one more

It's pretty dangerous to have the doors off. What if somebody t-bones you on the drivers side? You end up with their radiator in your lap.
He'd probably like you to be a more experienced driver first. It makes sense. Try telling him you won't drive on the highway with the doors off or something.

I have gone over this. IF somebody t-bones me with my doors off I might be wearing a radiator and also with the doors on. Anybody ever took apart there door? It is a little thicker then a coke cans aluminum. Like I said my parents hated the idea too. Take them off and let your dad take it out for a spin not with you( point is let him have his time and be jealous lol). I bet you he changes his mind.

Well your dad is worried..Even my parents are worried when I drive (and I am not that young) with no doors and my girlfriend's mother as well. I mean he is worried. Try telling him, "Dad, if I get in an accident with this think, doors on or doors off I am screwed" joking.. Try to built the trust, tell him to come with you for a ride with no doors or snap some pics when you see Jeeps with no doors so he can see.

Dude, I drove a 1978 Ford LTD Station Wagon (with a 400), complete with luggage rack. I called it the white whale. It was so big I had to get to high school early and leave late because the parking lot and spaces were so small. Yep, your right I did not date much in High School.
Now I'm 37 with 3 kids and still trying to get a wrangler (as a 3rd vehicle).
Respect your parents wishes to keep you safe, prove to them that you are a safe driver (it takes time).

If you have nowhere to store the top just leave it outside in the backyard. Wrap it in a waterproof tarp or something. It wont get ruined.
Get a few friends to come over and lift that bad boy off of there.

in texas, all you really have to have is the rear view mirror. that said, i put on side mirrors because i was tired of looking over my shoulder all the time, and they are great offroad. as to calling the pd, you dont always get a correct answer from them. i was trying to find out if it was legal for my son to ride up front, and they kept telling me no. i went to the texas dps website and found out that it was legal. fwiw, i think its great to ride with my doors off!

Yea, kinda a pain to look over the shoulder all the time. I'll be making some side mirrors when I get a chance. I just don't go door less as much as I'd like.

You are also allowed to drive legally with the windshield folded down as long as you are wearing protective eyewear (goggles etc) and are able to correctly display any stickers etc. that would normally be located on the windshield.
Here is something I found from the Texas DOT site regarding vehicle inspections (which would govern your legality question)
Inspection criteria is actually a little more lenient than actual state law (don't ask me, I didn't come up with that). Having written more traffic tickets than you could ever imagine in this great state of Texas, I assure you, driving without doors is perfectly legal.

There are a couple of different places to look for vehicle info when dealing with Texas law. First is the Texas Transportation Code. Second, there is the Texas Administrative Code, and then there are the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards in CFR 49 571.108. If you want to look through those books for something saying you are required to have doors, be my guest.....Or, you can take my word for it.

hahaha, so does mine. I mock his minivan every chance I get. He wants my jeep so does my brother...(He drives an H3)

My first car was a 1979 Ford Ranchero. I paid 1,100.00 for it. I've bought every one of my cars since. I think I'm doing pretty well now. OP thank your parents every chance you get...they did you a massive favor by getting you a car...let alone a Jeep!

My parents brought me up self-sufficient. I did my own laundry @ 5. Only mixed red and white loads once. I wish more kids were brought up like me....ok stopping the rant before it starts.

Doors off rocks. unless its 60 degrees @ 70mph. then its cold.
