Yes on the Rubi's. Very few guys on here are running the stock 245/75/16 size. I'm trying to decide what size I want to go with on mine. Stuck between 265/75 and 285/75 right now, but wanting to see what everyone else is running.

It's not just that 15's are cheaper... there is a lot more choices in sizes and more in Load Range C in 15's. When you get into the 16's, most tires available are Load Range E.

I've had a couple of tire shops and Dirk at DPG to urge me to go with a Load Range C tire if at all possible. Everyone says the E tires are too stiff and aren't necessary for the weight of a Wrangler. One tire shop told me that the E tires were more likely to develop death wobble over time.

In another thread Jerry Bransford said that most of the people complaining about GY MT/R's were probably those that have the Load Range E that came stock on the TJ Rubicons.

I have stock Rubicon GY MT/R's on my TJ right now. They are nearly bald. The ride doesn't bother me, but it's not my DD and we have pretty smooth roads around here.

Ok... I get that. I am going load range D. I know about the more rubber deal, but .5" on circumference is not that big a deal to me and all depends on the main purpose of your TJ as well.

Not anymore, 15's are going away more each day. How long has it been since a truck or jeep has had 15's on it from the factory? Its been several years and they won't go back to it I can guarantee it.

I agree and disagree. There are currently still a lot more 15's out there to choose from when compared to 16's in Load C tires. However, I do agree... there are going to be fewer and fewer 15's in the future and they won't be coming back.

Having run both for years there is no way I would ever go back to a 15" tire. I run load range D right now and I like that they last at least 40K which for a mud tire is just fine. The less unsprung weight in the the wheels the better. 16" tires perform better on road and just as good off road. You can also run bigger (better) brakes with a 16" (and bigger) wheel.
As far as choices in the name brand tires there will be more choices in larger sizes then then in 15's. They are a thing of the past and are getting more scarce every year, for a reason.
IE, just the first 3 tires I checked
BFG KM 2
8 tire choices in 15"
12 tire choices in 16"
10 tire choices in 17"

MT MTZ
3 tire choices in 15"
6 tire choices in 16"
5 tire choices in 17"

GY MTR/K
4 choices in 15"
6 choices in 16"
15 choices in 17"

Granted you may not have as many off brand choices and the tires will generally cost a little bit more. But IMO the small price increase is more then worth it.

Yes, there are more 16" tire options than 15," I agree with that. As I said above... there are more very few 16" options in Load Range C as compared to 15."

ie.

BFG KM 2
8 tire choices in 15" - ALL 8 are Load Range C
12 tire choices in 16" - 2 are Load C, 5 Load D, 5 are Load E

I would buy the BFG KM2's 265/75/16 in a heartbeat if they weren't Load Range E. I'm leaning toward the 265/75's size, but I can't hardly find that size in Load Range C. The best tire I can find in that size in Load C are GY Duratracs.

Here's my LJ with 285/75/16's load range D when it had a 2" BB and 1.25BL. Now it has 3" BDS coils and 1" spacers. Sits and rides much better.

I think your putting way to much into the "C" and "D" thing. The only difference I can tell between driving my buddy's Jeep with 35 x12.5 "C" and mine with the "D" is the huge handling difference on the road. You turn the steering , feel the rim turn and wait for the sidewall flex to pull the tread and Jeep in the same direction. The slushy driving is why Jeep has gone away from the 15" tire. After driving both for years, I would take the 16" D's over any 15" tire.

I agree, though this will make you favor the smaller 15" wheels rather than 16"+ ones. It is also one reason why I intend to stick with 15" wheels when I buy new ones to match the 35" tires I will be (eventually) installing on my Jeep.
