Picking a Jeep

So, I will be getting my first car soon. Like a few weeks soon.
And I know that I want a TJ, maybe 97 because its cheaper. But I have been looking online, and all the jeeps I find are like 7 - 8 grand, and that is too much...
Does anybody know where I can find a cheaper one?
Thanks for the help!

Check:
Autotrader, craigslist, yahoo autos, ebay, cars.com, and the for sale sections of: wranglerforum, jeepforum and other jeep specific sites.
What are you looking for in your first Jeep? Budget?

For starters, buy from a private party and have cash in hand...then you can negotiate down to a fair price.

For a Clean 97-00 TJ with a clear title, not beat to hell, not a rust bucket:
$5K-$7K for a I4
$7K-$8K for I6

You just got to keep looking. Took me awhile to find mine. Don't know your budget but mine was kinda tight. Some said I'd be lucky to find a jeep in my budget. Be prepared to compensate on some things and maybe look for one that's a little rough on the edges. Also if you're tight on a budget don't rule out the 4 banger. Got mine last Saturday. Needs a little work its all stock and the 4 banger but I wasn't afraid to get my hands dirty so I haggled the price due to some rough running issues and got a good deal and still had money to fix those issues. What you're looking for is out there you just may have to look a little longer and farther away from you. Best of luck to you.

7-8 is a pretty common number in the TJ market. My dad always told me that only a poor man can afford junk because it'l nickel and dime you all the way to the bank. That being said there are still deals out there, but unless you plan on dropping a lot of money into it with new parts I would steer away from the high milage/swiss cheese frame and what not. My advice would be look for something that is not completely beat, if you can find anything in your price range I would look into a YJ (87-95) Wrangler or an XJ Cherokee.

Picked mine up in November of 2011. Paid 7 for it, keep in mind this was my uncles so he cut me a break, his original offer on craigslist was 10. It is a great 2000 jeep wrangler sport, clean title, 80,000 on the odometer when I bought it, It came with a 4 inch lift 33 inch tires and has the 4.0L ... So good jeeps are out on the market just got to do some hunting for them! Good luck!

I paid 8k for my 99 sport. Had 119,000 on the odometer, a 2" BB, M/T tires, steel rims and a fortune dropped into the sound system. Jeeps will run forever assuming they're rust free, so they maintain their value really well.

My budget is around 6k. My dad is reluctant to get me a jeep for my first car because he thinks that they are death traps. What is the big difference between a TJ and a YJ?

Tj has a wider wheel base and a different body style , that's the reason my dad made me get a tj instead of a yj

Don't forget coil springs, TJs have airbags, oh and the 00 and up switched to coil packs versus the distributors. Also, the rubicon model on 03 and up and the unlimited "LJ" model from 04-06

XJs are badass, I had one until it got totaled. Here's a pic of it
Still love my tj though, there are differences between them so it's something to think about

Honestly 6K will buy a lot more for an XJ than a TJ. I hate to steer ya away, but if everything your finding is junk I would look for a XJ.

Sorry i'm not trying to jack your thread but does anyone know why TJ's don't have the electric fan setup XJ's have? You'd think the more expensive wrangler would get electric fans over a cherokee.

Nick, you might have better luck checking prices in an area where TJ's are a dime a dozen...if there is such a place. You'll have to travel but saving a few grand might be worth it.

I agree, id lean towards the XJ. My boy bought a 95 with probably a 2" lift and 32's with a rack and lights for $2100. Then promptly sold it a month after he got his license and bought an Audi A4 quattro

If you have the time & patience you can find a deal, BUT you have to be able to act quick. Any jeep listed at a bargain price (or a relatively decent price) won't last 24hrs. I've seen quite a few pop up, but they're always gone by the end of the day.

XJs are a great alternative if you don't have the funds for a TJ. You can usually find a really nice one for around 5 grand & the average run 2500-3500. However, as capable as XJs are, they're no Wrangler.

Also, don't be afraid of Jeeps that have 100k plus should they have the tried & true 4.0 inline 6. If the PO at least changed the oil regularly they'll go damn near forever. I bought mine with a 129k on her 3 years ago. About 175k now & she hasn't missed a beat with only minor maintenance. Hell, I'm considering an LJ with 150k now.
