pinion shim depth

I am replacing a set of 4.56 gears. Can anyone tell me what the normal shim thickness is roughly on the stock pinion.Or what it should be roughly with 4.56s.I need a place to start with as the guy I bought it from didn't have any at all.It tore half of the pinion gears off from the improper install. This is for a 97 wrangler with a dana 35.I put a .020 shim in And i see it is not enough. Thanks

Well YOU are the only one that can answer your question as every set of gears is going to be different and believe it or not that includes yours too. That is a trial and error process and it sounds like yours had been more error than anything when you purchased it.
