Plastic running boards

My 01 Wrangler has those plastic running boards, I thought about taking them off or replacing them with something else, well I finally (after 4 years) got around to actually paying attention to the way they were mounted. so now I have a question.

Is it just me or does every Wrangler with plastic running boards have frame mounts that look like a three year old welded them on?

And are they supposed to be welded?
only reason I'm asking is I have no ides how mine stayed there so long the way those welds look I'd say somebody had no idea what a welder is.

Factory running boards aren't welded on, it's likely a previous owner did that.

That makes sense. I know for a fact either a man or a machine would weld better that how mine are put on.

Maybe tomorrow I'll try to cut them off and clean the holes up, then buy bolts and put them on correctly

Took mine steps off not too long after I bought my TJ much to the bewilderment (she's 5' 2") of my wife. The plastic on one side was broken. Now I am at 25" from bottom of tub to the ground. Just had a pair of Rock Crawlers delivered yesterday. Won't be able to say nothing to step on!

I don't know if I would do that or not. They may be welded on because the bolt holes are unusable. Ugly or not, if they are solid I would leave them alone unless you want to take them off completely. You (and all of us now) are the only one that know about the jacked up welds.

I tried to take them off today, but I can't, at least not without totally destroying the mount plate. so they are gonna have to stay there until I can replace them with something else.
Bad bolt holes are no biggie to me I can either tap them out and re-thread them or weld nuts on the back on a plate and weld that to the frame, problem is I need the boards to get in on days when the knee don't wanna work right, so destroying the mounts is not an option. but believe it or not teh 4 nuts under the things came off like they were brand new, and they have 0 corrosion on them, wired since its not SS.
Even though the weld job looks like crap it IT solid (how I have no idea) so I gotta leave em there, but heres some pictures of the third grade weld job

My 13 year old could do better with a 1/8" 6013 at 120 amps
