Play in front driveshaft? Clunking? bad axle ujoint?

Lately i have been getting a lot of clunking/banging from my front end only while in 4 wheel drive. I've noticed also that i can rotate the front drive shaft a little. It doesn't look like its the u joints in the drive shaft, should there be any rotational play in the front drive shaft? Any other causes for my clunking? Axle u-joints? Sometimes i get a kinda sqeeking noise after the clunking. So confused by this.... should i just replace all the u-joints on the front end?

Rotational play is perfectly normal for a driveshaft, that is a result of the required backlash (slop) between the ring & pinion gears. So long as you can't see the u-joints moving and causing additional rotational play, I'd say your rotational movement is probably normal. The rear driveshaft should move/rotate about the same amount.

thanks Jerry that clears that up for me

Well, found my problem. Jacked the front end up today and discovered my passenger side u-joint is toast ( dunno how i missed that when i first looked) and the drivers side has some play also. So looks like ill be replacing both.

Odd question but, is pulling both shafts at the same time ok to do? Can i drive with the shafts pulled? reason is if i run into trouble doing the ujoints myself it would be nice if i could still drive the jeep. anyone ever do that?

Also, since the u joint is bad should there be some play in the axle shaft? What i mean is should i be able to wiggle it around a little or should it be pretty solid other than the rotational play caused by the bad u joint?

Im running the duralast in my front.DS after my OEM one got dry from wheeling in sand and it got the "angry sparrows" problem. Swapped it in, and have had no problems at all.
