Polished to black.. Black to polished

I have looked at many threads where folks have painted their polished rims black. I am wanting to do the opposite. I have a spare black Cragar soft 8 off of my TJ. The 97 is polished wheels. I am getting a full size spare for and would like to use this rim. The ones that's on the 97 now have been discontinued. I have never heard of it done but I thought maybe someone out there had tried it and came up with something close. Trying to save a few bucks instead of ordering a rim as close to the other ones as I can find.

I think you'll have your work cut out for you with this and recommend trying to get a trash wheel to practice on and see if you can get the look out of the steel you want.

Also, IIRC the Soft 8s are chrome plated to give them their luster and it might be easier/cheaper/better in the long run to take the wheels to a chrome plating shop - probably ~$75/wheel

You cannot polish steel wheels unless they have a coating that made them shine ( chrome etc...) Taking the black paint off will just reveal bare metal.... you will NEVER get it to a chrome or luster like finish. Now will will polish shiney to a point.. but not a mirror finish.

Soft 8's are relatively cheap.... just buy a chrome spare from Pep Boys or something similar for around $50....

Sure, you can polish steel to a mirror finish. It just takes a lot of time with a buffer and knowing what you're doing. You would have to seal it afterward to keep it from rusting. It would take more work to do it than would be practical, IMO.

This. They are way to cheap to waste that much time with it.

Or check craigslist, people around here are selling stock wheels all the time.

I took the advice and ordered a cheap spare today. It's close to the same. I didn't really have time to do all that stuff anyway. Thanks everyone.

+1. I polished mild steel to a mirror finish a few times just to see if I could. Its a lot of work for sure.
Its a bit out of focus, but you can tell its shiny.

I made a coin holder replacement on my mustang. Just plain mild steel with no coatings and it still looks great after many years.
