Possible Clutch Issue

n my brother's jeep when I try to go I pull out on the clutch and in on the gas and I get this loud knocking noise and it won't go anywhere. I think it is the clutch but I have never had this issue before, so i was just wondering if someone could help?

It's not likely to slip out of 2Hi but yes it can slip out of 4Hi into Neutral if the linkage is out of adjustment.
