Possibly buying this Jeep tomorrow

Hey everybody. I've been hovering around the site soaking up knowledge for a while now. I admit to being a forum junky and it looks like this is a great one to be a part of. I'm looking to buy a TJ and am going to look at this one tomorrow. Price seems a little high to me but it does seem to be in excellent shape. I just thought I'd toss this up to some of the more knowledgable folks here and see what you think. I am picky and this one has everything I've been looking for...my requirements are black/green/beige, manual, dana 44, 4.0L, reasonable mileage, and I was preferably looking for a very stock or well maintained jeep. This one falls into the well maintained, slightly modified category which I'm okay with considering I finally found one with the goodies. Still has plenty of room for me to make it my own. Here are the specs:

1997 Moss Green Jeep TJ Wrangler Sahara 4x4 with 101K miles
4.0 L I-6 cylinders
5 Speed Transmission
4WD
Dana 44 Rear End (he was under the impression that all Saharas had the D44, I know otherwise)
4"Suspension Lift New Rancho Shocks (eh, not to excited about these. rs5000 from the look of them, heard they are quite stiff)
Heavy Duty Steering Damper
Cold Air Intake
A/C
Fog Lights
Front Tow Hooks
Tilt Wheel
New Tan Soft Top
Full Metal Doors
AM/FM Cassette Player
Overhead Sound Bar
New Carpet
New Exhaust
Under Hood Light
Trailer Hitch
New 15 x 8 Super Eights Rims
New 33 x 12.50 x 15 Firestone Agressive Tread Tires
$8650 obo

He was a real nice OLD guy. Which is a good thing considering I don't want to buy a teenagers leftovers. Tell me what you think...

I don't think it sounds like a bad price/deal.

4.0 motors are very dependable, so if that one was taken care of at all, it's not even half broke in!!

Only 2 draw backs I see to it is the green color! Yuck!! Personally, green is about the worst color there is for ANY vehicle!! The other is the cassettes deck, which isn't anything.

Personally I love green on the jeep and I am not worried about the lack of a cd player. I have one laying around so no biggie. I'm going to call him and get him to send me a pic to make sure it has the dana44. That will either make or break the deal for me.

Make sure you look at the brake lines. Open the hood, back right of the engine bay you'll see the lines running down. Check for rust. Those little buggers like to rust and are expensive to replace if you don't know how to do it yourself. Looks good otherwise. I have a 98 green sahara and it's my favorite color!

Looks good overall and sounds reasonable to me. Only thing I Maybe see is it appears to be leaning to the passenger side front/or that fender may be tweaked a little. Not to big a deal either way but may want to double check look for other issues if that is the case. Also surprised all carpet was replaced-If I were buying, I would flip carpet back and look at tub and floor pans-the guy shouldn't care. Good luck!

Looks just like mine. I have the 2.5 which does just fine. I have 31x10.5, windh and I put in a sirrus radio because there isn't much to hear in the mountains, it has a removable face plate, cd player and am/fm. Small antannae on a magnet plate which is on the front of the windshield. Weather woods nor people have bothered the antannae
I paid $3200, spent about the same for mechanical work, winch and tire/can carrier. 152,000 mi

I have a 98 sahara same green. 150k, I paid $6500 for it. Not lifted and no Dana 44. I wouldn't worry about the cassette player. Rip it out and put in a new aftermarket head unit. Then you can connect your iPod to it.

I paid 6300 for my 97 sahara that had 114k on it with a hard top, bushwacker fender flares, 4 inch lift with 33x12.50s, vibrating seats,cd player with with subwoofer and a k&n intake. Guess I just stole mine. I doubt it has a d44 unless someone put one on themselves. Even if it does have one I'd still try to get them down.

Kbb says in "good" shape its value from a private party is $6525. It's almost $7 in excellent condition. You might want to keep looking or try to get him down.

IDK pricing- but new top, new tires, new wheels, and new carpet, gotta be close to $3k, if you add half of that to KBB excellent condition $7-puts you at $8500-but it depends on what it is worth to you-how bad you want this one as you, "finally found one with the goodies". Good Luck!!!!

Kelly Blue Book states $7300 in Excellent condition... there was no selection for 4" lift, CAI, and the rims. Everything else you mentioned I selected even the tires. In Good condition, it would be $6860 which from the way I see in the pictures is how I would classify it. As stated by MLaborde, bring him down but don't pay more than $7300 for it.

*edit: Also, let him believe that all Sahara's came with Dana 44. This way he doesn't charge you for more, because he could state that he had it installed to which would increase the value of the vehicle in his perception.

Great insight guys. I don't think I would call it a steal the way it is but I don't think it is outrageous either. KBB seems to have little to no effect on the resale value of these jeeps as far as I can tell, Unfortunately. Good point about not letting on about the dana 44 being optional. Gonna pick up the build sheet before I head over to make sure it's on there. Damn I'm getting Jeep Fever.

Probably quicker just to check it yourself by looking at the rear axle yourself.. FWIW.. But even with that said.. Build sheets are nice

Yes, green is super sexy on a jeep. I love the color. And yes it would be quicker to look but it is 4 hours from me so it would be quite a drive to find out no Dana 44.

Looks nice, as stated check for the 44 rear, very limited number of TJ's have them from that year.
