Potential Jeep, whats it worth?

Hello all
I'm a newbe and in the market for a wrangler TJ. Today on my way home I spotted a 1997 Wrangler sport that caught my attention. It is dark green with 49k miles on it, 5spd, 33 inch tires, American racing rims in ok conditon, Warn front and rear bumpers, and a newer soft top. The owner is asking 9995 which seems high to me for a 1997. I know its low miles but Kellly blue book only values it at about 6900 for a private party sale. What do you guys think its worth? I've included a picture I took before i left.

Thanks in advance
Kevin

I'd say that is pretty expensive. I'm only asking 9500 for my red jeep. You can check it out for comparison sake.

if you are willing to fork out 9 and a half grand for a vehicle, i'd definitely recommend looking at Mr Cs rig.

Mr C's looks really nice but my budget only really allows me to go up to 8K max, my uncle has a 2000 sahara that he might be getting rid of so there's a chance i could get a good deal on it.

I just bought a 2000 Sahara with 78,000 miles tonight. It is a manual and is in very good and clean shape. I paid $8,100. It has American Racing wheels and a LSD. That's one point of comparison.

i think thats kinda high for a 97. There are lots of Jeeps out there ... i would just keep looking till you found one you really like and has a decent price.

You should take into consideration the upgrades it has. it has a lift 33''s warn bumpers piaa lights looks like bush wacker flares and low miles.
I'd say its depends on what your looking to do.
You could get a stock jeep much cheaper but a built one works better in the woods!

Really low mileage for the year but it is a '97. Not to low ball the guy but I really wouldnt pay over $7500 for that Jeep. Aftermarket parts dont raise the resale value of a wranlger much, if it all. Id either try to explain to the guy what he is really trying to sell there and remmind him that it is now almost 2009 or just move on and try to find somethin else. But it looks decent and if you can talk some sense into him then it might be worth it.

It seems high too me but this guy is probly trying to break out even, calculate the cost of his lift, bumpers tires and wheels added to the book value and its probly close to what he is asking.I have just spent 3 weeks shopping for a TJ,deals are hard to come by these days.My 2 cents

As much as the guy would want to get his money he spent on the rig, once you give it in upgrades. the value of the upgrades decreases. So that 4 k you spent last month on the brand new D44 axles, is now 1-2k max.

Aftermarket parts shouldn't affect resale value. In fact, a lot of times they drop the resale value because the new owner usually has to change things that he doesn't like, some things won't pass inspection etc. etc.

As far as that Jeep? Over priced. It is winter, Jeep values are typically highest in summer like a convertible, and the price on anything with 4x4 has dropped like a rock due to the economy and unstable price of gasoline. I know Jeeps hold their value pretty well, but for $8,000 you can get a much newer and nicer Jeep than a 97.

just under 10K is way too much for a 12 year old jeep. it does have low miles but still not worth the 10K. if you want that one i'd offer the guy 7K and see what he says. it couldn't hurt to try.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I think I'm going to try to talk some sense into him, if I decided to go for it I'll offer 7k and see what he says. It does have a few issues that i am wondering about, the wheels are chrome and most of the chrome is either very pitted or flaking off I guess I would just have to either paint them or replace them? There is a small amount of rust on the rear tailgate hinges, and some bubbling paint on the tub where two body panels meet under the hinges is this a common spot for rust? Is it hard to fix? The passenger door lock seems to be jammed and I actually couldn't get the door open from either inside or outside with the key, is this an easy fix? Also the driver side door panned two cracks right below the window, it would probably need to be replaced, is this easy to do? How much is a drivers door panel typically?

Show him all of the above items and start deducting off his price. Look at the rear axle, if it is a D35c (oval w/rubber plug) deduct another 2 grand!!!
