Potential TJ Owner - Price Check

Hello Wranglers,

I posted this in the newbie forum, but I was recommend to place it here. I did notice a similar recent posting, the 1999 Sahara, so my question is sort of already answered.

As copied from my previous thread, since it wasn't moved:

Unfortunately, I am not a Wrangler TJ owner, yet; however, I have been looking into purchasing one. My criterion are as follows: 4.0 L Inline-6 Engine, Soft-top, Half Doors (if possible), 5-Speed Manual

My main question, albeit kind of vague, is what are the Jeep Wrangler TJ's pricing, in general?

There was one that caught my eye:
Yellow - 2001 Wrangler TJ Unlimited Sport
5-Speed Manual, 4.0 L Inline-6 Engine, Smittybilt 8,000-lb Winch, Soft-Top with Full Doors

The dealership was pricing it at $9995. In my opinion, with my lack of Jeep knowledge, this was priced $1500-$2000 more than it should be.

If anyone could shed some like on Wrangler TJ pricing, it would be appreciated.
In addition, I have attached a photo of the vehicle to this post, as I don't think I'm allowed to post a hyperlink to the selling of a vehicle that isn't mine.

Thanks,

PineappleOranges

P.S. I'm not looking for it to be completely modified with thingamajigs and whatchamacallits.

Additional Information

I couldn't seem to locate the button for editing the thread post, so this will have to do:

Mileage: ~98 000 mi.

Usage: I don't plan on doing off-roading aside from the occasional dirt road or sandy beach. With that said, I'd like to have both the capability for off-roading as well as the 2000 lbs. towing capacity, as I may wish to construct a small daysailor.

Thanks,

As mentioned, you may want to wait. I agree with you: it's overpriced. That they listed it as an "Unlimited" is a red flag in my book. Waiting kicked my ass, but I'm glad I did. It made the purchase that much more sweet.

I'll add that I had to respond because I wanted to use this as a new quote in my sig and felt I should offer some input rather than just copying, pasting, and running.

Can I ask why you wouldn't want to off-road with it? I know everyone buys their TJs with different uses in mind, but I'm genuinely curious. I love off-roading in mine and I learn a lot about it as a result!

Well, it looks stock to me with winch added, is a plus. That not a unlimited. TJ Unlimited were manufactured in '04-'06 only in TJs, which are called "LJ". LJ are a longer wheel base Wrangler but 2-door. IMO, LJ are the crown jewel of TJ era. You can easily trade or sell full doors for half door and extra $100-$200 in your pocket. Should look to see if frame has rust. Question ask yourself, was it near salt water and TJs are noted for rusted frames. Florida jeep only, not originally from Northeast location? Price for 2001 depending on mileage is $7000-$8000.

Got my 1998 4.0 manual bone stock Sport last year for about $6k. Of course, depends where you are, so ymmv significantly.
I knew what I wanted, but in hindsight I wish I'd known to look at the differential gear ratio.
Hold out for one geared the way you want. You can take the VIN, call the dealer and ask for the gearing ratio. You want 3.73 or higher. 4.10 would by better. Dana 44 rear would be best, but are hard to come by. Worth your time to look into this before you buy.
