power steering hell!

I need some help ya'll.
chased the squeal down to the pump and went to AZ to get a new to me one and this one is squealing right from the get go. I have read that this has happened before to folks, but just want to make sure I didn't mess it up. Besides I have already spent 3 hours on this and changing the idle pullies.
I installed the new pump with a new pully and put the jeep in the air so I could turn the wheel to bleed the air out. Turned it on and instant squeal and has not faded.
A little feedback would be helpful.

Did you fill it with fluid before you started the jeep?

Hmm then idk sorry man wish I could help! If you started the car and turned the wheel while you put fluid in it will growl and make all sorts of noises! Don't ask how I know lol! Not supposed to turn it on when doing it.

How many times did you turn the wheel full left/right before starting? After turning 20-30 times each way, make sure to top off the resevoir (using the dip stick attached to the fill cap). Theen check fluid levels again after a couple hundred miles. Also, make sure your belt isn't tensioned too much. That can put a lot of pressure on the pully bearings and create new and different squeals.

I got mine for my I6 Sport from Advance Auto Parts and the first one I got from the store was a bad rebuild. Had to take it back for another one which worked for me. I've heard of having to try 2 or 3 different pumps before getting a good one.

Good luck!

What made it bad? Is the squeal alone good enough to return it?
I only did about 6 each way for turning the wheel.

It sounds like to me, though, that you didn't get all the air out of the lines. As I mentioned above, at least 20-30 times with the resevoir cap off to get the air out. If you turn the engine on and it still squeals, turn it off and bleed the lines more. If it's not running quietly after a couple shots, it may be time to return for another pump. This would also be a good time to throw a new belt on to ensure that it isn't the belt making the noise.

Have you tried to rotate the pulley by hand with the belt off? It should turn freely like the rest do.

Have you checked the tension on the belt? If it's too tight, that will cause undue pressure on the bearings and you will hear it.

Do you have a 4 or 6 cyl? There are different set-ups between the 2.

tried free spinning all the pulleys and the alternator and ps pump rotate fairly well but not like the ac and idler pulleys
I'll do more bleeding cuz I really don't feel like busting any more knuckles.

Let us know how it goes after bleeding/topping off. Sounds like the PS pump may be in need of replacement if the pulley isn't spinning freely.

after doing all the wheel turning and a little top off, still have the squeal. Dang, guess I need to take it out and go down to AZ for another. Well at least I'm getting good at it.
On a side note, I think I will try a new belt just for giggles, since I don't know when this one was replaced. It looks pretty good but not the deep v's of a new one.
Hopefully, will have this solved tomorrow night.

Well glad to see you figured it out lol! And there's always a plus side, now you don't need to worry about a new water pump or steering pump for a while
