Just wanted to share this and see if anyone cares to snowball off of it.
A few weeks ago I rented a small car for a trip to Santa Barbara. I rented the car at a Hertz on the base I'm stationed at. I live roughly 25 miles (30 min travel time) from said base and by the time my girlfriend got to my apt we were already running about 20 min late to pick up the rental. Halfway there she realized she forgot her phone in my kitchen and I'm a stickler for time so at this point I'm teetering on the edge of irritated. (This is relevant to the post I swear)
Normally I run about 60 on my way to base. I have a 2003 TJ with a 4.0, 42rle, 3.73's, and 33" AT's. I would say at around 60 I'm averaging 1500 rpm... lugging and getting 12 mpg.
Like most guys in their 20's when I get irritated I drive a little less cautiously than normal and when I'm running late AND irritated... I drive like an a-hole.
After flipping around, grabbing her phone, and returning her 5 redbox movies, and listening to her complain about her wet Toms I was finally on the road red faced and an hour late with the cruise set at 70 snaking through the morning traffic.. I never ever tried to push that thing past 65 before. By the time I got the Hertz I noticed something miraculous. My gas needle barely moved. I kept this in mind and on the way home tried it again. Same thing! I accidentally stumbled upon some mystical black magic that put me into the mid-high teens for mpg! If I'm not mistaken this wormhole is around 2000 rpm. I've been doing this for a few weeks now and have noticed a significant improvement.
I know we drive underpowered shoeboxes but I was curious if anyone else has toyed around with rpms trying to pull the very best out of their rigs and what you're getting?
