Praise the lord and pass the ammunition...

It is sunday and normally my range day after church, HOWEVER, it is that time again and instead of going to the range I will be doing my routine maintenance on the jeep. After flipping through the new spring edition of quadratec, I saw some steering wheels. I had a few questions. First, how involved is it to get the wheel off? Second, is it possible to switch from an airbag to no airbag? Third, is there a specific bolt pattern I have to look for? I dont have a lot of cash and am looking for an easy way to make my jeep exactly that, MINE. Thanks in advance guys!

as for the airbag they are mandated by the feds, so you would need written permission to remove it from what I have read, but check with them.

I've never done it. But you will need a puller for the steering wheel. Not sure about bolt pattern. and if you remove the airbag the check engine light will come on and never go off. That's not a big deal for most people. As far a governmental regulations. Screw them, but I don't really think there are any. You could build a custom car from the ground up and it doesn't have to have an airbag so why would your custom jeep? It must however have a seatbelt.

I wouldn't remove it. Make your jeep yours in some other way.

You might want to go read the laws before giving legal advice.

Op, here's where to send a request for deactivating your airbag.

Skeet and 4Jeepn are correct. I looked into having mine removed because I'm short enough to make airbags in certain vehicles dangerous, but I raised my seat instead.

here in East tennesse we usually disregard laws like this. Sorry for giving you advice that contridicts the government. They know what's best for you, listen to them...

I agree on the air bag. I just pulled my fuse so the sensor is now off. There maybe a over ride in it but I honestly have no clue. I have seen in some cases were the airbag has done more harm then good and some the other way around. I always wear my seat belt so it is not that much of a helping to me then breaking my fingers or nose. I took the air bag out of my mustang for this very reason, I road race it even tho it is a street car i that air bag goes off when racing on the track ie lose it and hit the wall I don't want that hurting my chances of getting out of the vehicle if need be. If you want to take it out then do it. Your vehicle and if by chance you get into a accident and you get hurt by not having that airbag that is your choice.

Perfect example of not wanting your airbags when wheeling. I slid into a tree last time out it was muddy and slide down the hill and hit the tree pretty good with the front bumper on the license plate. Could it have gone off yes. Would i want it too no that is why my fuse is pulled. I will be pulling mine out when I find a wheel I like.

Yea chances are pretty good no one will notice that you have no airbags if you get pulled over, But i would check with your insurance agent and see if it affects your policy in an event of an accident...

Well guys and gals, with all due respect, I've seen what airbags do...I've been a firefighter/emt for 7 years. The only ones that I have seen LEGITIMATELY save lives are the curtain air bags. I personally have no problem with removing mine. All the airbag stuff aside, are all the bolt patterns on the steering wheels the same? Thanks again for all the great responses!

I pulled the airbags in my 03' ranger, I had a full setup on the front I loved jumping that thing and getting 4 feet of air but was scared of the bags going off so I pulled them. Its what you want to do the feds are not going to show up at your door and ask you if you have airbags in your truck and if you get in accident just hook them up if your paranoid. I totaled the ranger out in 05' due to somebody pulling out in front of me I'm glad I had taken them out prior they would of went off for sure. But no one was concerned about why my bags didn't deploy, who cares there not going to send forensics out to figure it out the way I see it there going to deploy on me not you so I don't want them if you don't like it go jump in a lake. lol

For instance a airbag goes of and hit hits you square in the nose breaking it then also knocking you out. then your knocked out not able to move. I have been hit by a airbag I never want to feel that force again. I have burns on my arms and broke a finger. I was in the passenger seat. Never again will I get hit by one. They hurt big time.

Short story we were in a parking lot. Making a right turn. The girl driving proceed to make the turn then stopped right as she stopped the guy behind us well hit us at i dunno 10-15 mph. The girl stopped because the turning didn't stay in his lane coming at her. So yea airbags went off and I was grabbing the cd case at my feet looked up when we stopped and bam the air bag caught me sqaure . I was pisssed.

That's probably because that's the only requirement Wisconsin has for mirrors.
From chapter 347 of the Wisconsin vehicle code.
Quote:
347.40 Mirrors. (1) No person shall operate any motor
vehicle upon a highway unless such vehicle is equipped with a
mirror so located as to reflect to the operator a view of the roadway
for a distance of 200 feet to the rear of such vehicle.
