Problem filling up the tank! Anyone else dealing with this?

I have had a problem off and on over the years with several Wranglers (1998, 2000, & 2003) not letting me fill the tank at the pump. I have to barely squeeze the trigger on the pump to keep fueling or else it will click off like the tank is full. My 98 did it once in a while, but my 2000 has done this every time I try to fill it up now.

I have been trying different gas stations and octanes and it's still doing the same thing. It takes me about 10 minutes to fill the tank now with the trigger barely squeezed in. Could it be too much pressure in the gas tank? Anyway, just wondering if anyone else is dealing with this. It's not a big deal in the summer, but in January I get a little testy about it.

With some of the new pump handles you really need to push it in the hole very hard to get the vapor hood compressed enough to keep it pumping. On the motorcycle I hold it back by hand or you cant see when your full.
In Illinois thy dont have the vapor junk on the handle so it's a lot easier.

I have this problem with my 02. Unlike what Bird Dog said I actually only stick the pump handle in about half way. Obviously the pump thinks the tank is full too soon. My theory is that something with the Jeeps makes the gas splash around and trick the pump handle into thinking it's full.

My 02 does the same thing. I put the handle in all the way and then pull it out just a little, then when it shuts off I just squeeze it a few times till it's full.

My 97 does the same thing also. I even shake the jeep via the rollbar to try and burp the air out of system, but, it still does it.

Thanks,
Chuck

My 05 does the same thing. Once it spit the nozzle out and gas went everywhere. I thought it was just me. A lot of times I have to just hold it there until it is full. Luckily it is not a 30 gallon tank.

I twist the pump handle a little to the right so that the nozzle is to the left and it seems to work fine. It fills right up. If I put it in straight, it will shut off everytime.

Check your tank's vent hose (the smaller diameter hose of the two) that runs up to the filler neck assembly. If it is kinked, it can cause this very problem.

Thanks everybody for the tips. I'm glad it's not just me. I need to go do some driving and burn up some gas and see if I can get one of these tricks to work. Sounds like a glitch Jeep has with some of the TJs and JKs. Thanks guys! You saved me some serious freezer burn this winter.

Me to. This is the easiest thing i've found to do so far. Works every time tho.

This happens to me with my 98, I filled it up one time and put it about half way, and when it was done... I took the gas pump out to put back on station and gas came squirting out... idk why...

My 98 used to do that. My 05 doesn't, but 70% of the time (and always at different stations) it likes to spit fricken fuel at me before the pump shuts off. If I don't "top off" after it spits fuel, the gas gauge reads just under full too, not over full like normal vehicles

if you have a body lift it makes it even worse. i had to play with the filler a little to get it to work properly when i put the tank in a few days ago but alls good now. the breather is small diameter and likes to kink, actually the filler likes to kink too but not quite as much.

did you extend the filler neck after installing the body lift? may help with your filler kink issue

I have the same problem with my 00 one. If I twist the handle 90 degrees to the left, so that the nozzle goes to the right, it's OK. Oherwise it takes me minutes and minutes to fill the tank.

Is there a rollover valve on Jeeps?

why do I ask?
On miata's there is a one way valve in the Fuel filler neck, it sticks causing this exact same problem. There was a recall on the part from Mazda....So maybe jeeps have something similar?

Hmm never had that problem with my 02. Worse thing was that damn factory locking gas cap, how I hated that thing once I threw that away about 4 fill ups after we got it in 2002, never had any other issue!!

My 97' 4 cyl. does it. I just thought it was me. Last time I filled up I must have put like 14 gal. in it. I really didn't think it was that low. My girlfriend was wondering where I was putting it, I never got that much in at one time before. And I still don't think it was full. Filling up 2 cars and a Jeep isn't cheap.

part of my love for my Lotus, its fast, pretty, and only holds about 11gals total. so I rarely put over 9 gals. in it. and I get ~100 more miles to the tank in it than I do my jeep.

My 94 does it too so it isn't just a TJ thing. When I fill mine I have to turn the pump handle 45* clockwise for it to work good.

No issues with my '98 but have had the problem on a truck that ultimately was a vent hose issue.
