Problem with 4.88 and higher gears

So I know this will not apply to most of the forum, but thought I would bring it up for those of you that it does affect. I like to do a good portion of my wheeling in Moab since it is so close to where I live and went to college. I am going in a couple weeks with a relative that I have never been with before and he explained that he wants to get his axles redone before we go. He had his axles rebuilt to put in 4.88 gears and due to this it pulls him down the slick rock at unsafe speeds. So basically he shifts his Jeep into neutral whenever going down the rock which heats up up his brakes considerably. Which of course is not a good thing. I had never thought about this as I have 3.73 gears, but it makes sense. Just thought I would pass it along.

4.88 gears should slow you down on steep inclines (at least with a stick)! What are you trying to say?

His new 4.88 gears pull him down the slickrock at an unsafe speed? He must have explained it to you so what he said was misunderstood. Regearing from a higher ratio like 3.73 to a lower ratio like 4.88 (4.88 is a lower ratio than 3.73 in ratio-speak) slows the vehicle down, it does not speed it up.

In other words, you would descend or ascend slower with everything else being the same with 4.88 gearing than you would with something like 3.07, 3.73, 4.56, etc..

So unless he considers a slower speed to be more unsafe, someone has it backwards.

Jerry now that I think about it more what you said makes more sense. I will make sure and call him right away to get the story straight. He was going to have them start working on the Jeep this week.
