Proper Winch Pulling Power ???

I was told that the winch on your vehicle had to have the power to pull 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle, because if your Jeep is stuck, that winch is pulling, not only the weight of the Jeep, but also has to overcome the mud that has the Jeep stuck.

Is 1.5 times the weight a good number to go by? Or, do you need more pulling power than this?

From what I've seen it's "at least" 1.5 times.. Everything I've seen says you need at minimum a 8k winch..
