Purchased Programmed Key for $60

Purchased a programmed transponder key for my '06 @ local locksmith for just under $60 with tax. He took the key, verified it was #2 chip with machine. Programming took 1 minute and then cut key without leaving his shop. I tested key and paid the man. Stealership wants $120 plus tax with appointment.

Great! I only had one key and couldn't self program unless you have two good keys in hand. So locksmith cut the key and programmed for $60 bucks. Stealership wanted $120.

that says they only have it for the 2007+ models. i am looking for a cheaper key, walmart wants $60 for one, that sounds insane to me.

You can buy transponders keys on ebay for $10 each, unprogrammed for TJs. If you have two keys, then programming can be done @ home (no issues). However, if you have one key (only) then you are out-of-luck and @ the mercy of a locksmith or stealership.

I only have one key for my Jeep and talked to a locksmith about getting another cut.

He stated while they can cut and program a key, it is an exact copy of the original key you supply.
While it will work to start the Jeep, you cannot use it with your original key to program more keys.

For simplicity sakes, say you have the 2 original keys. We'll call them "Key A" and "Key B".
If you have both "A" and "B" keys, you can program additional keys yourself.

If you only have 1 original key (let's call it the "A" key) and have the dealer make you a key, they will provide you with the "B" key. If you have a locksmith provide you with a new key, he will provide you with an exact duplicate of the "A" key and cannot be used with your original key for programming purposes.

Vince, that is not correct. You can use ANY two working transponder chip keys to program a third key. The first two keys can be originals, replacements, or any combination of original and replacement keys.

They must be two WORKING transponder keys. Then you can then self-program a third or more (up to 8 per owner's manual) keys.

Easy to follow directions are in your owners manual.

If you don't have a manual, they are available online here:

Have you confirmed this first hand? I'm not doubting you but why would a locksmith tell me otherwise knowing by doing so, he is losing business?

Honestly, I hope you are correct, it will save me and others the cost of what the dealer charges.

Yes, I did this myself. ANY two working transponder chip keys. Can be original or replacements, as long as they work correctly with your vehicle.

That's awesome Mabar,
I'll get a second key cut and programmed from a locksmith and then program a third myself.

Thanks!

Sounds like a plan. You can program up to 8 additional keys yourself, per owner's manual directions.

Mabar.
