question about Optima red top?

well i plan on getting a winch in the next couple of weeks but i know my stock battery wont be able to handle it so i wanna get an Optima red top. Autozone has four different ones to choose from and i was wondering which one is the best one to get? i know they all have different cold cranking/cranking amps but im not sure which one to get. i also plan on adding more lights so that's why i want to upgrade too. thanks

Get the biggest one that will fit, but your stock battery might work fine too. The alternator is a big player when winching and if you are loosing power you can stick a twig in the throttle body to bump up the idle (not IN the throttle body, but you know what i mean). Ive had a red top in my mustang for a couple years now and was amazed on how fast it turns the car over, even when its been sitting for a month. I used to have a yellow top, and it worked fine but I like the red top way better. I know some guys say that the optimas are now made in china and suck, but they seem to work great for me. I'm not sure that the people that spread these rumors have actual experience with these batteries. (you know how easy internet rumors spread) When my battery dies in the jeep, I'll buy a red top for it.

Search this forum regarding the topic of batteries. Plenty of opinions to be found. Try it, you'll see.

And with regard to adding lights, it's all about your alternator output, not battery capacity.

Another vote for considering keeping your stock battery and bumping up the throttle if needed. It only costs 15 bucks to put a hand throttle in versus buying a 200 dollar optima.

well after seeing jerry's comment on Optima batteries i think im gonna shy away from them. he really went into detail about how much battery space they actually use and how they are made in mexico now. He recommended Sears Diehard platinum. sounds like a pretty good battery so i might look into that or just wait and see if my interstate can handle it. My alternator was replaced just last year so i should be ok on that.
