Question about warranty

This is my second TJ, but my first brand new TJ. I want to lift it like my last one but I have a question about the warranty. If I have someone other than the dealership do my lift, i.e. myself, will that most likely void the warranty?

Will they continue to honor my warranty if I have the dealership perform the install?

I've heard of so-called "mod-friendly" dealerships. I believe I have one or two of these in my metro area. Should I have them do the work?

Thanks for your input.

If you are talking about the manufacturer's warranty, then you are safe. As long as you do things the right way, you are not going to void your warranty. They must first prove that the lift caused any breakage before they could deny you any warranty repairs. Talk to your service manager for specifics. If you don't like what he has to say, then go to another dealer.

Now as far as aftermarket warranties go, you have to check your fine print. They all have different conditions that must be followed.

Short answer yes. Warranty work is a PITA in the azz to get done as it is. I have been fighting to have a rear main seal leak fixed for over a month. It leaks a quart of oil a month, I can neel down and see the oil coming down the transmission, but the dealer cannot find a leak .

Anyway, LEGALLY the dealership cannot "VOID" any warranty no matter what, only deny a claim and red-flag your account. But any modifications will make it much harder to get, your already hard to get work, done. The only thing they can do is deny your claim, and they will not warranty anything that your modifications effect.

Personally I dont think its worth it. If I could afford to do mods, I would cancle my extended warranty, put that cash in a savings account and just add 20-50 bucks a paycheck incase something breaks. But since I am a poor college student, I think Ill keep my warranty and keep my Jeep stock for a little bit

Like Binaryking said, shop around at different service departments (start at the one where you purchased your Jeep) and talk to the service manager. I had a sales manager say to me when we were looking for a Jeep for my buddy a couple of years ago "We had a guy come in here last week, and buy a TJ to lift it, and put big tires on it, I know that we won't even touch it after that". Talk about losing a sale quickly! But I have found a great dealership that loves to see my Jeep with 35's come rolling in for service/warranty work because they get to see what I have done to it. I never have to wait for the initial writeup because I get several techs hanging out around the Jeep when I pull in. I have never had to ask twice or fight to get warranty work done on my TJ, even after the lift.

If you have to ask what it is or what it does, you don't need it, and you will need help to install it!

You are a very very lucky man!! Ive been to the three big dealerships around here, and I have to fight to get a phone call telling me whats going on with it before 4 pm (when I drop it off at 7 am) let alone actually get any work done! Gets a little irritating, but I guess it differs by your location. Talking to the service manager about their stance on mods isnt a bad idea, and like I said above, they cannot "VOID" anything. Only thing they can do is deny a claim and red-flag your vin number. At that point, you are legally allowed to request to see their proof, and get it in writing in order to fight it. Usually at this point they give in, but do NOT expect any warranty work to cover mods that failed or something of the sort Good luck, hopefully you dont live in centeral MD..

It's about 48 miles from philly, to the west.
