Question about wheels

Hi, I currently have a 97 Tj se it has stock wheels and tires. I would like to get cragar soft 8's and eventually run 31's. I searched on here and read threads about wheels and sizes and backspacing but I'm clueless when it comes to that stuff.

Im pretty much in the same boat, except I bit the bullet and went straight to 33's, stock suspension and flat fenders. Looked kinda goofy for a couple weeks with the 29" radials and the fenders.

From what I've read youre gonna want a 15x8 wheel with anywhere from 3.75-4" of BS.

If you plan to stay with 31x10.50 tires and never go any bigger, go for a 15x7 wheel. The wheel will need to have a 5x4.5" bolt pattern and have backspacing between 3.75" and 5.25" of backspacing. The more backspacing, the further into the wheel well the wheel will be positioned. For example, a wheel with 4.75" of backspacing will be positioned 1" further inside of the wheel well than one with 3.75" of backspacing will.

For a 31x10.50 tire, I'd choose a 15x7 wheel with 4.5" of backspacing and that 5x4.5" bolt pattern. That's for if you will never go with a bigger tire.

If you think you may eventually go with 32x11.50, 33x12.50, or even 35x12.50 tires, go with a 15x8 wheel with everything else remaining the same.
When you have a choice, buy American.

Jerry, I have read on several threads your comments about wheels. The issue I have in following your advice is that it appears only steel wheels are avalible in the 4.5 inch backspace. I recall saying you once picked wheels with improper backspace and made your TJ look like a skateboard. How little backspace makes the jeep look like a skateboard in your view. And what wheels do you recommend for a person that wants a light weight wheel & tire package .. seems most light weight wheels are going to be about 3.75 inch backspacing.
