QUESTION: Unlimited or Regular Wrangler?

So after many years of waiting, I might be getting my first Jeep.
I am pretty sure I want to stay within the TJ era (97-06)

I only want the 6cyl, and mostly leaning towards the automatic.
(If you care...blue, white, black, or silver)

I am open to any and all advice...Anything you think I should hear pro's or con's for any of the above i.e. unlimited/regular, 4/6 auto/manual etc.

Thanks for any advice or input in advance.....

I own an 06 rubicon unlimited and would highly recommend this over the regular wheelbase for several reasons
-extra storage space.
-little better ride on the road
-extra legroom for rear passengers

good luck

Well it would help if you let us know what your main goal is with the jeep. Daily driver, rock crawler, if off roading what type and how nuts do you want to go.

Personally if you want a great package right out of the box I would suggest a Rubicon Unlimited. (LJ Rubi) Plus if you really want an auto, odds are it will be easier and cheaper than if you went looking for a stick.

Something like this...

Do you think I'm gonna open a pandora's box of problems going this route or should I stick to a dealership/private used Jeep.
Again salvage/repairable fits my college budget a bit better....Money is really the only factor.

This Jeep is going to be a daily driver. Plan on keeping it for years!!!! (been wanting one for years..lol)
Mild trail riding, camping etc...I'm sure as I get more involved with my Jeep I may learn how to "really" off-road but until then...
As far as look goes, I love the Rubicon unlimited or regular, size, stance everything so I could see my Jeep looking close to a Rubicon in size...

All depends on what you want to do, this is a very open ended question and everyone will have an answer to fit their needs.

If you have the means get the lj. I love my tj and it's payed for, but if I where in the market the lj would be the way I would go now. They were only made 3 years so they will keep their value even better then the tj.

Go for the LJ it has a better ride. The ride makes it better for everyday driving. They also have a little bit easier time moving over rocks and ledges on the trail. Its all up to you but I dont think I will go back to the SWB any time soon.

Where did you come up with that?

It all depends on the rocks and ledges.....there have been many situations that I have had a much easier time getting over some obstacles than the SWB rigs in my club. But there have been a few that the longer wheel base made it a bit more challanging. However I have found that it is usually in favor of the LWB.

With that being said, I have to admit that the SWB rigs have a much easier time negotiating tight trails over my LWB. Quite often a SWB rig can make a turn in one try that would make me do a 3-5 point turn.

After having both. They both have their advantages. SWB models allow you to easily crawl over rocks and navigate tight areas. LWB allows you to climb ledges and drop off of large faces. Like JP said, an LJ owner will have to make a more complex turn than a SWB in the same turn.
