Questions about gearing/axles

I have a 98 Jeep Wrangler Sport... no Sport here!! Fifth gear is a joke, unless going downhill!! I am very satisfied with its low end power when 4 wheelin, but no power on the highway. It has the 4.0L I6 motor with Dana 30front and Dana 35 rear axles. I have a 2" lift with 32" BFG all terrains for streets and 33" BFG mud terrains for muddin. What is the best upgrade to get more power on the street, without cashing in the 401K, not that its worth anything after last years beating?!!

I would regear to 4.10 or 4.56 (a bit too much for 32s..).

Should I just change out the gears in the existing axles and nothing else on the axles? I would love to put lockers in, but not sure if i can afford them right now. Should I put the same gears in both the front and rear axles? what would the 4.52's do wth 32" all terrains? Thanks for your help!

both axles need the same gears.
with 32s and 4.56 gears teh TJ would be very fast. but it would have a bad gas mileage because the RPMs would be very high at normal highway speeds.

if you want some stronger axles you could install some chromoly axle shafts.

depending on the gears that are in your axles you could need some new diff cases.

I plan on putting 33" to 35" tires on it later, so its probably best to go ahead and put the 4.56 gears in it. I want to put a 4" suspension lift on it... current 2" lift is a spring lift with new shocks. Put it on to stop the tires from rubbing, it was quick and painless! Should I leave this on when I install the 4" suspension lift? I will post the current gear info tomorrow, when Im able to get under it, to see if it will need new dif case. Thanks again for your advice!!

standard D30/D35 axles wont be strong enough for 35" tires. Im in the same boat as you, id also like to run 35", and a 4" teraflex enduro kit... but I live in South Africa... lift kits and axle components are very expensive to import!

Your in SA? Ask the user "Kavanji", he´s from Windhoek Namibia. He found a way to ship parts from the US for a good price.

I didnt think about the axle strength... thanks for the heads up. Do you guys think the 4.56 gears and 33" tires are the best match with the stock D30/D35 setup I have or go with the 4.10 gears and 33's?

4.56 is pretty ideal for 33" tires providing the tranny is the 5-speed manual.

It is a 5spd! I cant believe it... 3.07's!! What is the best way to make sure the previous owner didnt re-gear already? As you can see, it looks like its been opened with the red gasket sealer ozzing out. It doesnt seem as slow on the highway as I would imagine 3.07 gears would be. I can hit 80MPH+ unless going up a hill, then I have to switch to 4th gear to maintain 65+MPH. Any advice would be great!

Yes, you got 3.07,s I have a 97 tj sahara 4.0 5 speed .It had 3.07,s I ran 31 inch tires, never used 5th gear.Just regeared to 4.11,it was expensive (needed new carriers beacuse 4.11 ring and pinion wouldnt fit) I now run 33x12.5 tires and use 5th ,but Jerry is correct on 4.56 being ideal for 33 inch tires.IM just a tad tall with 4.11,s.If I go up to 35,s Im regearing to 4.88,s
