Quick question

How would I know if my timing is off?

The engine either would not run or it would run extremely poorly. The TJ's engine timing is 100% under control of the engine computer (ECM) so the timing is not likely off. Timing can no longer be adjusted on today's computerized vehicles by rotating the distributor like we did in the pre-computer days.

So even if I replaced the oil pump drive and at first didn't put it back in the right position and then kept taking it out and putting it back in until it finally started and seemed right, it would be right or it wouldnt start at all or sound horrible?
