Quick Question to putting speakers in.

I have installed numerous speaker systems and the such but I can not figure out on my TJ which is the positive and negative sides. I have on the driver side. yellow black striped then blue black striped. Pass side I have blue red striped and white blue striped. It would be great to find out which is which so I can solder my new speakers in and call it a day.

Thanks

Josh

Are you hooking it up to a aftermarket head unit?. If so then you pick what wire you want to be what. Just hook the + from the new deck to the wire you want to be the + wire.

If your hooking up to the stock unit i have no idea. I got a new head unit to solve that problem..lol

Yep, speakers don't care which wire is + or - so long as you connect the + and - wires to the same sides on each of the speakers so they all remain in phase with each other. If one speaker is out of phase, it will sound funny (hollow sounding in the middle of two out-of-phase speakers) and you'll have a noticeable bass reduction.

that is not true, there is a reason they are marked with + and -. if you switch them, instead of pushing the speaker up it will push it down. this causes lots of harm to the voice coil.

I think you are mistaking what Jerry meant. He mean that the speakers do not care what wire (color) it going to + or - as long as it lands at the matching connector at the stereo or amp, it won't matter.

Exactly, thanks for confirming that. And to be clear, you could also connect the - of all the amp outputs to the + side of the speakers and + of the amp outputs to the - of the speakers and so long as all speakers were connected with that same exact polarity, they will all still be in phase with each other and work perfectly well.

I'm tearing apart the inside and repainting all the dash, door panels etc. and getting rid of the puke tan. I found these 2 speaker places (see pic). Do you guys use these and if so, what kind of speakers go in there? 4x6 or what?

Thanks

Yes, those speakers that (were?) in there were 6x9 stock.

So, you can replace them or put in some 6" roundies (which some of the audiophiles on this site prefer).

I didn't thing a 6x9 would fit, but that's why I'm check with you guys. Do the 6" roundies fit as is or do ya have to mess with it. I'd like to get some tomorrow while I got it all being taken apart.

Options are available. You can order 6x9 speakers that will fit as they have the correct mount.

You can make a mount for either a 6x9 or a 6" yourself.

Don't have to buy here, but crutchfield.com has a great tool to help you locate the correct stuff.

You can put a 6x9 in the same spot of a 4x6? I was having trouble putting the 5-1/4" speakers from the sound bar in there, better yet 6x9. That WILL be tight.

Went with the pioneer 4x6, they sounded pretty good at the store, $85, we'll see once they are in.

On a similar topic my 98 TJ only came with the two 4x6 speakers in the front I am looking to install 6'' round speakers in the back. What would be the easiest way to do this? is there a wiring harness I can connect new speaker wires to?

Hawk: unfortunately i doubt you will really hear them. it took me 75w of power in front of each front speaker before i could really hear them and iv got alpine 5.25 type-r in there.

jwb4786: yes there should be a wiring harness already there. you will find it running up the drivers side main roll bar tube under the padding. its designed to hook into a roll bar speaker bar. its got 6 wires, 4 for speakers and 2 for a light. easiest way to get speakers up there is to find a stock speaker bar. they come with 6" speakers in them, crappy ones tho, but i had no problem installing 6.5 alpine type-r speakers in there. the hole was already big enough to take the speaker, all you need to do is trim some fabric and drill the 4 mounting holes. if you put any real power to the speakers you get some rattling from the light tho so you need to silicone it in to stop it from making noise.
