Radar Detectors

Anyone know of any solid radar detectors? On top of that, where's the best place to put the radar detector in a TJ?

Thanks!

i got one on mine, the front sensors are installed in the front bumper where the yellow lights usually are, the rear sensor is just mounted onto the rear bumper under the spare tire. i got the unit stuck on my windshield with suction cups just in front of the little built in tray on the dash. i'll try and post pics later.

Yeah, why do you need a radar detector in a Jeep, #1 and #2, they're a waste of money.

from what i've heard radar detectors are a massive waste of money. by the time the thing goes off the cop has already got you. i've heard the only thing that actually may work is a radar jammer, which i think is illegal in most (if not all) states. i know in jersey if you are caught with one in your vehicle there are some pretty hefty fines.

CORRECT!

I will lock you on before your radar even knows I have you. The only way you'll stop radar is the jammer, and it is a big fine here in Jersey. Don't waste your money on a detector, jeeps aren't racecars.

I dont have one in the jeep cause it isnt that fast, although I have an Escort Passport in my Lightning. It has saved my ass more than once.

Radar is mostly a thing of the past now anyway. They now use a laser that determines your speed in a split-second, way too fast for you to react and slow down. Plus their beam is so narrow and concentrated that even laser detectors probably won't pick the laser up as the officer aims it at other vehicles that may be in front of you.

Even if they do still have radar, later radar guns only pulse the radar for a split second so unless there are cars in front of you so you can pick up the radar pointed at them, it too will get your speed too quickly for you to react to it.

With today's technology, radar/laser detectors aren't much help in avoiding a ticket like they used to be.

I find there are situations where they save my ass and situations where they are useless. In towns where there are hills and turns everywhere and the cops use radar they work like a dream. The detector will go off and then about 10 seconds later you see the cop around the turn or the hill. Mine has saved me a ticket numerous time in town.

On the other hand they are garbage on the highway. Cops will be using lidar or aiming the radar gun at you by hand and by the time the thing goes off you're screwed cause they've already got you.

Bottom line mine was a 60 dollar cobra and it does what i need it to do. I know alot of my buddies who have 200+ dollar detectors that don't work any better than mine.

One last note dont turn you're music up too loud or else you'll never here it go off. That's how i've got all my tickets

me buddie [who also has a rubicon] has a ESCORT PASSPORT radar dector.. it was quite a bit of $$$ but it saved my butt a few times.. his is one of the newer ones that has 360 coverage and so many modes and functions that i dont even know where to start with it.. i do know that we had to bend the mounting bracket a bit to make it work with the jeeps windshield. its a nice piece of mind knowing you have a minute edge against the man..
