I just got a 2003 tj automatic and I went to open the hood, I noticed that the hose coming from the top of the radiator to the thermostat( I think) was kind of sucked in. I released the rad cap and the hose went back to some how its normal shape. I ran the car for a while and the hose was still in its normal shape. But once the car got cold the hose got sucked in again. I release the cap and it sucked air in and the hose went back to its normal shape. Another thing is my radiator is not fill all the way to the top. How do I fix this hose problem? Do I need to get a new stat and do a flush?
I bought the jeep for Utah and I live in miami. The coolant inside the radiator is kind of red/orange. Should I replace it the the 50/50 green coolant? Thank you.
The radiator should stay full. coolant should get pumped into the overflow bottle when the engine is hot, and sucked back into the radiator as it cools back down. check the overflow bottle to make sure there is coolant in it, and check the hose going from the radiator to the overflow to make sure it's not clogged up or torn.
On my daughter's jeep, the hose was clogged with junk and the coolant wasn't able to get to the overflow.
Iv'e always had the green coolant, but I think the orange is the newer longer lasting antifreeze
I checked the over flow hose bottle and it seems Ok. No obstruction. I was reading online And they mention that this happens sometimes if u have a bad radiator cap. I'm going to replace mine and see if the problem goes away.
Bad rad cap. It's allowing excess fluid to be dumped into the catch tank normally, but is not sealing and allowing the fluid to be drawn back when it cools down, so it sucks in air instead and creates a vacuum, sucking the top hose shut.
Top off your coolant, run without the cap on till you see the water circulating. Pop the cap on and you should be good to go.
Probably be a wise idea to replace the hose too. You don't know how long this has been going on, and it could be weak.
