radical brake explosion!!

..more brake woes in W.O...

2003 Sahara, auto, 44k

I parked my truck facing down my driveway, which is relatively steep, with the e-brake on of course..

When i go to drive it, the pedal goes almost all the way to the floor but i am still stopping. I pull over and check the brake fluid reservoir which is almost empty which leads me to a leaky driver-side rear drum. It looks like it's coming from the area where the hardline connects with the wheel cylinder but the whole area's a mess, soaked from the backing plate to the hardlines and even a little on the axle.

I dropped it off a few minutes ago..

BTW: what type of brake fluid does the TJ use?

the dealer called me back just now and told me it's going to cost me $400 to fix the rear driver-side section of brake tubing and the wheel cylinder. apparently, i was driving and something jumped up and snatched the line right out of the wheel cylinder, thus it is not covered under my so-called extended warranty..

am i getting hosed?

Cut the line where it is messed up, reflare it, and go. Or buy your own brake line set and install it yourself. It isn't rocket science.

Just regular DOT3 break fluid... DO NOT add DOT4 or DOT5

yes, i actually have tubing left over from putting in 8 new brake wheel cylinders for my FJ40.. now if only i could re-use the 8 other wheel cylinders i have sitting at home... since it's under warranty i figured i would get my $'s worth..

i just spoke to my service rep: after he quoted me $400 for the job he eventually came down to $265. I didn't know you could haggle with your service rep!
This includes:
$55 - Wheel cylinder
$5 - Brake fluid
$15 - brake line
$190 - labor (2hrs)

Thats the plan but how often do they accept the blame and do their job?

as pointed above.. cut the tubing just a bit before the end.... attach a piece to it that continues all the way back and you're good to go.

yeah, i can't understand how something like this could be my fault. the dealer says since it was caused by my driving so it isn't covered under the warranty. Otherwise, if the failure was due to defect it would be covered.

also, somehow they say the brake wheel cylinder was damaged when the tubing was "pulled out"...

i'm calling Chrysler today to complain about this dealership..
