Question Radio replacement (stock 2000 TJ cassette with 2002 CD player)

How simple is the swap for the cruddy 97-00 Cassette (who even remembers these?) player like this:

With a later model like this (from a 2002):

I assume I need an adapter for the dash and also the rear connector? If so, does anyone have the part I can ref (I'm on a remote island, I have to order these things blind)

Or do I just go for a better-sounding aftermarket model anyway and use a mounting kit like this?

Replacing the stereo in a Jeep Wrangler is possibly the easiest thing you can do and I'm guessing the radio swap you are contemplating will be a simple plug and play thing since I doubt they would have changed the wiring harness connections in the TJ model run. I put in an aftermarket radio in my 99 and not counting the soldering of the wiring it was a 20 minute thing to do. Normally I recommend Crutchfield for the research but buy the gear elsewhere but when you factor in the wiring harness, faceplate adaptor, and all step-by-step instructions you get when you buy from them you really can't beat Crutchfield. I swapped out my entire system for around $250 (speakers and all) and it was a 1 hour project at most. Oh, and I've never done a radio swap before and it couldn't have been easier.

They changed the plugs in 2002.. Go to a junkyard and find yourself a harness from any Mopar donor...2002 to 2004.

Just saw you were in GCI...
Pretty sure you could get a "replacement harness" on Ebay.

sorry yeah meant to post I need to order stuff "blind" as I'm pretty remote... I'll check out the stock replacements then as it seems that I'm gonna need to do that anyway for probably a fairly weak, if newer, stock unit - thanks for the replies fellas!

I would suggest new speakers and an after market head too.

I started with speakers. Then added a head. Then a powered sub. Then I upgraded the fronts to a 5.25.

The head made a massive difference.
